At first removing the seat cushion, using screwdriver, removing screws from underneath the chair. Will deal with the seat cushion later, put it aside for now.
Then removing the backrest attached with nuts& bolts to the metal base.Using wrench for turning them opposite side, coz bolts are rusty this takes abit strength and time.

Cleaning the Metal Base

Cleaning the metal base and all other metal parts with sugar soap first, so adding sugar soap into bucket of water and using cleaning cloths to clean up metal parts. Then using clean water removing the soap.
After giving good clean drying the metal base and metal parts with dry cloth.
And then placing nuts and bolts into a plastic plate adding brake fluid generously and let them immerse. Same as the chair base, covering with brake fluid , this will help to remove rust later.

Cleaning the Wooden Part

While the metal parts immerse in brake fluid, less start to work on the wooden part.
Using sugar soap again.
Adding Sugar soap into a bucket of water then with the cloths cleaning the wooden base.
This piece does need more than one bucket of water for squeaky clean.
At last must use clean water with clean cloth cos if any soap residue left, will have adhesion issues.

Sanding

Now covering my sanding block with sanding paper so will be much easier to work with it. The piece has deep scratches, needs 60 grit for those scratches, then following in order 120 grit and 240 grit for smooth surface.
Only need smooth finish no need to sand it to bare wood for painting. Then make sure clean all the dust.

Priming

Using B.I.N primer from Zinsser.
Shellac base primer so better to wear gloves also a mask.
Must stir well, does need solvent to clean up so I am using disposable cups instead of paint tray.
This primer a bit costly than most other primers, but it is runny ,quiet thin goes on smoothly and small amount gives good coverage. Only needs less than half a cup here. It is best known for no bleeding trough accept all top coats and dries quickly so need to work fast. Coz of this round shape I'm using brush here ,you may get more benefits using foam rollers with this primer as you can apply it much faster .

Removing the Rust

While primer is drying going back to metal parts to removing the rust which brake fluid already working on it.
At first I'm using wire brush, eye protection should be considering as these little wires can be dangerous.
After brushing it ,mixing methylated spirits with water for wet sanding, methylated spirits help to remove the oil as well as fine sanding.
Then give a good clean with soapy water then clean water

As the spray paint travels prepare surrounding , covering floors with plastic sheet, need to be in well ventilated area and must wear a mask.
Applying Rustoleum metallic gold, paint and prime together, attaching trigger gun to the bottle for easy more pro application, make sure the nozzle looking out, otherwise will cause dripping, shake it well,at first spray elsewhere than on the piece.
No heavy coats meaning do not spray on one spot, long strokes across overlapping and lifting up my button when I get from site the site. Going from dark colour to light takes couple of coats on each section just layering up,once happy with the coverage no need to spray over it again .
For bolts and nuts given tiny cut on the box and sticking bolts in to upright position and placing washes as well for spray painting. Shake the bottle and spray light coats.

For the wooden part applying Taubmans water based enamel, semi-gloss finishes in white colour. Using different stirring stick and brush because previous ones used for shellac base primer.
Stir it well and brush it on. Using disposable cups again just cause easy for me to hold the paint in small amounts when applying it,you can use your tray as a water based paint only need water to clean up.
To eliminate to brush marks first dipping my brush into water (floetrol can be added into the paint as well if have budget for it) then into the paint.
Applying long strokes covering full length of the piece. ( Please watch tutorial video for clear demonstration & more tips ,the link can be found on intro)

Working on the Seat Cushion

While the paint is drying working on seat cushion, basic staple remover gets really handy on any project requires removing staples. Pulling out the old staples with pillar.
Removing the fabric, checking out the foam and it is ok to reuse. Steam clean the foam and let it dry.

Sealing the Metal Base & Parts

Screenshot_20220121-230435~2.png
Screenshot_20220121-230506~2.png
Screenshot_20220121-230520~2.png
Screenshot_20220121-230721~2.png
Metal parts dried, seal it with rustoleum clear top coat. It is not recommended to use clear top coats on metallic paints cos can take the shine away, I am willing to get that look coz this Rustoleum metallic gold paint mainly made for the decorative items not for furniture, when it comes to chair is going to be alot of movements ,kicks and bumps may cause damage to the paint so better to seal it. Same application for bolts and washers.

Applying Second Coat on Wood

Screenshot_20220121-225126~2.png
On good weather giving 2 to 3 hours for the first coat paint to dry then applying second coat with the same method. If desiring very smooth finish lightly sand in between coats.

Cutting the Plywood

Screenshot_20220121-225224~2.png

Screenshot_20220121-225428~2.png
Screenshot_20220121-225435~2.png
This plywood for the seat cushion is mouldy, not able to clean it and damage , remove the plywood from the foam , keeping the foam will reuse it. Coz not attached the plywood anymore ,washed fully and let it dry.
Drawing from old plywood to new MDF board so I can cut exact shape. Using jigsaw to cut the board. Please do NOT do what you are seeing on the photo, I placed the MDF wood on the milk crate coz I don't have proper cutting table, Never Ever ! muck around with power tools, consequences can be a disaster πŸ™

Final Coat

Screenshot_20220121-225017~2.png
Screenshot_20220121-225121~2.png
Screenshot_20220121-225149~2.png
Screenshot_20220121-225143~2.png
Third final coat using craft foam just light application giving more smooth finish.
When it comes to enamel paints, they made for doors and trims, very strong hard finish paints even water based ones, so not really need protective coating but if more durability requires you may use Cabots water based sealer or any other sealer can apply on water based paints and non yellowing.

Assembling the Parts

Screenshot_20220121-225634~2.png
Assembling the backrest just doing reverse order how dismantle it first.
And before attaching the seat cushion to the board, placing the new board on the chair checking it for perfect fit.

Covering the Seat

Old material is too dirty can't use as a template, place to foam on the board than measure it always cut the material couple of inches more.
You may glue down the foam to the board. First using thin fabric staple it with staple gun ,then staple main fabric paying attention to the corners. Placing temporary staples will help the fabric not to move when working on other sides. Cutting excess material off and placing dust cover on it. (Nothing special as I am using old mattress protector, you can use any fabric available at home for underneath )
