Ceiling Mounted Bike Work Stand

I needed a way to do maintenance work on bicycles but didn't have the money or room for a store-bought repair stand. I saw many good designs online by others but this is my version. I have to thank Jens Jacobs for the main idea. His swings up out of the way but I didn't have room for that.

I used 3/4" galvanized pipe.
1 - floor flange
1 - 4' piece
1 - 10" piece
1 - 90* elbow
1 - adjustable pipe clamp aka pony clamp
2 - wood blocks (hardwood is best)
4 - 2.5" or longer wood screws for flange
4 - 1.5" wood screws for jaws

I mounted the 3/4" pipe flange using 2.5" wood screws to a ceiling joist. I did pre-drill the holes. My garage has a plywood ceiling and it was easy to find the joists because of the nails holding up the plywood.

I screwed in the 4' down pipe into the flange hand tight only. Then I screwed on the 3/4" elbow and the 10" horizontal pipe. I need to be able to remove the pipe when not in use which is the real beauty of this design because you can just prop up the pipes in the corner or hang them from the ceiling on j-hooks.

I got my pipe clamp from Harbor Freight for about $9 after a 25% off coupon. Simply slide the adjustable clamp onto the pipe first and then screw the end clamp on. This model has holes already in the jaws so I could attach wood blocks to better hold the seat tube. All I had was a pine 2x4 so I cut it into 2 - 4" long blocks, stood then on end and drilled the biggest hole I could which was 1". I really need 1.25 or 1.5 so I can put pipe insulation around the seat post to protect it and give it some grip.
