Supplies
- White or black ABS plastic. I will use this plastic for its higher impact resistance compared to PLA plastic.
- 1 millimiter thick self-adhesive magnet plates to stick to the bottom of lettering pieces.
- 1 millimeter thick steel plates to place inside the lids of the boxes where the letter pieces will be joined.
- Velcro to secure the closure of the box. On the bottom cover I will glue one side of the velcro and on the top will be a velcro sewn through a support designed for this purpose that will join the bottom.
- Glue.
Software
- Fusion 360
Box Design
The overall design of the box follows the tutorial "How to 3D Model a Hinged Box for 3D Printing - Learn Autodesk Fusion 360 in 30 Days: Day #19" by Product Design Online:
Modifications that I made:
- More arms for the hinges.
- The original design prints the pin for the hinge. I have eliminated that pin for a metal one and added a tap to enclosed it.
- I have added fillet all around the edges.
Design of the Top Layer With the Alphabet
Note: This top layer will be printed separately to the top box lid and glue to it.
1. Extrude the surface of the top lid creating a new body.
2. Extrude anther layer to contain the alphabet.
4. Create a grid with construction lines in one of the new created spaces for letters to determine where to place the dots for the letters. Add a dot in each of the six positions.
5. Create a patters following the tutorial on step 3 to add dots in each of the letter slots.
6. Remove surplus dots to write the alphabet.
Write the Name of the Alphabet on the Layer Created in the Last Step.
Create a new grid with construction lines to determine where to place the dots for the letters. Write the words, in my case "alfabet catalĂ ".
Design of the Peaces for the Letters
1. Sketch for 20 by 30 mm and extrude 5 mm. Use the filled option to round the corners 2 mm.
2. Create a new grid with construction lines to determine where to pace the dots.
3. Use as a base for each letter. The example above is for letter "a".
Not 3D Printed Parts
A 1 mm steel plate should be glue to the bottom of each lid.
Self-adhesive 1 mm magnet plate at the bottom of each letter piece.
Use velcro to make the box "lock" as in the sketch above.
