Cardboard Storage Box

In this project, I built a cardboard box organizer/storage using old shoe boxes. I came up with this Idea because while I work, all of my pencils, colored pencils, markers, etc, are always disorganized and just laying around everywhere. After doing some research, I either could build a storage box, or buy one from the store. Because I did not want to buy any storage boxes to sort out my tools, I built one myself using the materials I had at home. My constraint was that I must build anything using used materials. The materials must also be non-harmful.

Designing Prototype

Before starting on my storage box I had to create a design for the box. I designed my box using a CAD program called Onshape. First I measured the dimensions of the shoe box that I had. The dimensions were 14" by 7" by 5". The model I created will have room for colored pencils, markers, post-it notes, etc. This design includes 5 sections with handles and can also close with a top.

Cut Out Cardboard

After designing the model, it's time to get to work. First, for this design, cut out 4 pieces of cardboard. Cut out 2 pieces that are 6.5" by 4.5" and 7" by 4.5". These will be the "walls" that separate each section in the box.

Assemble

Next, assemble your box. Start by measuring 3 in. from the side of the box and place and glue both of the 6.5" pieces down where the 3 in. mark ended.

After placing those pieces, you need to place the rest. Start by measuring 2.5" from the back wall on the inside of the box. Then place and glue your cardboard horizontally. Repeat this step for the second piece except measure from the most recent wall just placed.

Organize

Your box is finished! Be sure to make sure that the cardboard pieces are put in nicely and glued in well. You do not want a fragile box. Now you can organize it how you would like to. You could also customize the box by painting it, drawing on it, and more.
