Cardboard Robot Hand

This is a fun craft to make. You can even pick light items up with this hand. This is a slightly difficult item to make because the string has to be the perfect length. I hope that you try this out for yourself!

Supplies

  • Cardboard
  • 2 pencils (optional, you will need at least one to trace)
  • String or yarn
  • Paint or any other decorating materials (optional)
  • Drinking straw
  • Hot glue
  • Scissors

Preparation

First, I gathered all of my materials and traced my hand on the cardboard. I traced my left hand because I wanted to wear the robot hand on my right.

Then, I cut out my hand on cardboard. I used an old moving box because the thicker the cardboard the better. I added creases where they are naturally on my hand.

Straws

After, I put straws in between the creases to that the string would have a place to go through. I also added a handle for my hand to go through.

Next, I added strings that are long enough to make loops for my fingers.

Then, I carefully measured loops to fit my fingers. I used hot glue to glue the strings in place.

Reinforcement (optional)

I hot glued a pencil to the back and a sturdy piece of plastic to the front. I used a non sharpened pencil so that there would be no risk of being poked.

Decoration (optional)

I painted the straws, handle, and reinforcements to make the robot hand look more professional. I chose spring colors to paint the straws and white to paint the handle and front reinforcement. I painted the back reinforcement to blend in with the cardboard.

Finished!

I love playing with this robot hand! It can be used to pick things up or just to play with.
