In this instructable, you will learn how to make your own portable mini-speaker out of cardboard and old airplane headphones.

Supplies

Materials:

  • Cardboard
  • Some duct tape (a tiny, tiny bit)
  • Headphones that have wires going to either side. (see images. Examples: airplane headphones, kid headphones, etc.)

Tools

  • Something to cut with
  • Possibly a hammer
  • Possible a saw
  • Possibly tin-snips
  • Hot glue gun (with glue)

Prep Headphones

Prep the headphones! Cut off the loop using the tools needed. When done, test with a device to see if it still works. Set your volume high!

Cut Cardboard

Cut the cardboard into appropriate size. I made mine 3x3 and 1x3.

You will need:

  • 2 large top panels
  • 8 small side panels

My dimensions are:

  • 3x3 for top
  • 1x3 for side
  • (will vary for build)

Assemble!

Glue 4 of the side panels onto one of the top panels. Repeat for rest of pieces. Use scissors to cut one of the glued corners apart on either box. Pass one of the speaker wires through and put the speaker into the box. Glue down the speaker and wait a minute to dry. Put the boxes together (speaker side facing each other) and put duct tape on one side to make a hinge. Test to see if it opens. On the open side, put another piece of duct tape where you can see the tape from the other side.

Test and Enjoy!!!

Plug it into a device and enjoy! Below, there is a recording of me using it playing Sad Robot.
