Cardboard Play Microwave!
This is my very first instructable, so I decided to keep it simple. But that doesn't change the fact that I am super excited to make this! Anyways, as you can see from the title, we're going to be making a cardboard microwave!
Supplies
Tools:
- Ruler or measuring tape
- Pencil or pen
- Plastic wrap (optional)
- Scissors or Xacto
Cardboard Pieces (You can make the pieces smaller or bigger if you want):
- 20x12 in (4 Pieces)
- 12x12 in (2 Pieces)
- 5x10.5 in (1 Piece)
- 2x8 in (1 Piece)
- 2x4 in (1 Piece)
- 1x1 in (10 Pieces)
Gather Your Materials!
Tools:
- Ruler or measuring tape
- Pencil or pen
- Plastic wrap (optional)
- Scissors or Xacto
Cardboard Pieces (You can make the pieces smaller or bigger if you want):
- 20x12 inch (4 Pieces)
- 12x12 inch (2 Pieces)
- 5x10.5 inch (1 Piece)
- 2x4 inch (1 Piece)
- 1x1 inch (10 Pieces)
Making the Loop
Once you have gathered all your materials, it's time to start!
First, glue (or tape) one of your 20x12s to another 20x12. (See image 2.1)
Next, glue (or tape) your two joined 20x12s to another 20x12. Now you should have three 20x12s glued ( or taped) together. (See image 2.2)
Finally, take the two ends of your joined 20x12s and use your final 20x12 to make all your 20x12s into one loop (By gluing or taping them). (Does that make sense? I sure hope so!) (See image 2.3)
Turning Your Loop Into a Box
Now that we have our "loop" we're going to close it so it's a box:
First, take one of your 12x12s and glue it to one of the ends of your loop. (See image 3.1)
Then, repeat with your other 12x12! (See image 3.2)
Decorating!
Finally! It's time to make our microwave look like a microwave!
The first thing we need to do is cut a door so we can put things inside. To do this, draw a rectangle on the left edge of your box. The rectangle needs to be 1 inch away from the edge and should be 10 inches tall and 13 inches long. Now cut all sides of the rectangle, except the vertical line on the left. (See image 4.1)
Next, we need a handle. That way, it's way easier to open the door:
Take your 2x8 inch piece and bend it so it has a slight curve. Fold about an inch from the edge on each edge. (Make sure to fold it inwards!) This is so we have a base to glue it onto the door. (See image 4.2) Glue each "base" onto the right-hand side of the microwave. (See image 4.3) (Mine was a little high)
Now we need a time display:
Take your 2x4 inch piece and glue it at the very top (about a half-inch away from the edge) of your 5x10.5 inch piece (See image 4.4) Now you can write a random time on the 2x4.
Decorating Part 2
Now we need buttons!
With your 10 1x1s, create a pattern like this:
1 2 3
4 5 6
7 8 9
0
Don't forget to write the numbers on your buttons! (See image 5.1)
Almost there, we just need to attach our button panel to our microwave. (See image 5.2)
Finally, let's cut a hole so we can see whatever we put in the microwave:
Cut a hole however big on the door. Then, glue or tape the plastic wrap on the hole. (See image 5.3)
You Did It!
Congratulations on completing this cardboard microwave, if you chose to do so. I hope you enjoyed this!
