Today I will be showing you guys how to make a cardboard replica Appolo command module. I have always wanted to make one and now is the time!

And...lets start...

Supplies

  • cardboard (amazon boxes work best)
  • scissors
  • precision knife
  • PVA glue
  • (lots of reference photos!)
  • circle compass/cutter

The Reference Photos!

when making things with cardboard we cant make it exactly like the real thing but we can try our best and that challenge is what makes me love to build in cardboard.

These are essential tools!

The Body Section...

First cut out three discs with a diameter of 6cm each, next cut out a long rectangle about 5 inches tall and wrap it around the first disc at the base of the tube. Once it has dried cut a small door on the size as shown in the 4th photo. glue the second and third discs right above the door.

The Side Bay Door

To fill in the space in the "door" that we made previous we must make the interior of it. First bend a piece of cardboard tall enough to fit into the door. I made a small rectangle and covered it with many random small pieces of cardboard, lastly stick it in the door like in the 4th photo.

Exhaust

To make the exhaust roll a cone (of peeled cardboard) with a chopped of top. and glue it to a ring of cardboard as in the third photo. glue the whole thing to the bottom of the body.

The Small Details

Now the time has come to make some details like the (high-gain deep space antenna), and some of the bottom parts.

The Crew Section

Now using a circle compass cut out of a (peeled) piece of cardboard a disc with a diameter of 11cm. and once you have done that cut a slit going to the center point curl it into a cone to fit onto the body.

Now you can glue squares and shapes (following the photos as best you can) along the surface of the cone. lastly cut of a bit of the tip off and glue the whole thing on top.

The Cherry On-top

Now to finish the build cut out a three pronged shape (as shown) and glue it on top of the cone, secondly roll a strip and glue that on top, lastly cut another (much smaller!) cone and glue that on top of the roll.

And... we are basically done. I recommend that you go and look at reference photos and wrap up any details that you (or I) accidentally left out...

DONE!

And now you are completed with the Apollo space command capsule! this makes a great gift to anyone who is into space and Apollo things, they will love it when they see all the effort that went into cutting out the small parts that went into it...

Thank you for reading and as always..HAPPY CARDBOARDING!
