My heater is in a corner and blows all the hot air out next to our sliding glass door, so I made a heat deflector/redirector to move the air into the center of the room instead. I tried a plastic one from Home Despot first, but it melted and deformed in 20 minutes into an unusable lump of plastic 🤔

Cardboard + aluminum duct tape + magnets = perfect solution and was basically free since I already had the supplies.

  • cardboard box(es)
  • razor blade knife
  • packing tape (or whatever tape you have)
  • aluminum duct tape
  • rare earth magnets
  • measuring tape/ruler

Full Directions

  1. Measure the height and width of the heater vent
  2. Cut out 2 matching rectangles of cardboard
  3. one side of the rectangle is the distance you want the redirector to extend from the wall
  4. the other side of the rectangle is a little more than half the width of the heater vent
  5. Round one edge of the rectangle to create the curve of the redirector (I traced a large jar to get a smooth curve)
  6. Measure the distance from one corner, along the curve, to the other corner
  7. Cut out another rectangle of cardboard
  8. one side of the rectangle is the height of the heater vent
  9. the other side of the rectangle is the distance measured in step 4
  10. Pre-bend the rectangle from step 5 to make it easier to tape to the side pieces
  11. Tape the rectangle (from step 5) to the 2 side pieces (from step 2) with packing tape on the inside only so it doesn't look ugly when it's installed
  12. Use aluminum tape to securely connect the sides to the back (also on the inside only - no ugly things allowed, lol)
  13. Cover the entire inside of the vent with aluminum tape
  14. Tape 4 magnets, using aluminum tape, very close to the edges of the side pieces so it will stick to the metal heater vent
  15. Clip it on, and enjoy getting all snuggly with some cats in your lap.
