First you need to print out the Chess piece templates.

After printing them out cut around the piece roughly then stick it on the the cardboard.

Cut around the edge of pieces using a knife.

Do the same until you have all the pieces you need for your chess set

Make Them Stand Up

The next part is to make the pieces stand up.

To do this cut out a small piece of cardboard to act as a base.

To attach the base to the piece use a tooth pick pushed threw the base and in to the pieces excess tooth pick

Print out four copies of the chess board image, the image is design to be printed out at 100% you may need to change the size a little this will depend on the type of printer you are using

You will have to cut off the top and bottom squares from the print out which in fact are not square but rectangles. You will have to cut off the white strip down the side (if this isn't clear I've labled the picture which should help)

Once that is done tape the four parts of the board to a sutible size pieces of cardboard.
