Cardboard Catch-all Shelf

Unlike my old apartment, my new one has very little space in near the door for a place where I can drop my keys, phone, etc. when I get home - even a small table would be in the way. A little shelf, however, would do just fine!

With just some cardboard and push pins, I was able to whip one up that looks pretty nice.

note: I have since upgraded toCardboard Catch-all Shelf (2nd edition)which I find to be a little prettier and this one is a little bit minimalist for me, but that's just my opinion.

You'll Need. . .

  • - the template provided here (if you wanted, you could add in some interesting background down the sides and along the top using Photoshop/G.I.M.P./similar programs and the attach the paper to the cardboard)
  • - a piece of cardboard cut to 8.5"x11" (if yours has folds like mine did, make sure to align those where you'll want the folds when you form the shelf)
  • - small craft blade and scissors
  • - some push pins (I used 9, but you could likely use less)
  • - glue (optional)

Cut and Fold

  1. Place the printed template over your cardboard
  2. Hold it down firmly (or glue/tape it down) and cut around the entire gray portion EXCEPT the bottom edge
  3. Make the three folds as indicated in the previous step
  4. Slide the top two tabs behind the hole formed by the cuts
  5. Gently slide down until the tabs are past the notches near the bottom
  6. Using some push pins, affix your shelf to the wall
  7. Voila! Simple storage for keys and a phone that won't be in the way!
