Carbon Tape Gloves/mittens V1

Heated gloves mittens.jpg

Hi,

January 2022

My hands and and fingers get very cold while skiing. I looked at purchasing heated gloves but they were expensive and the reviews that I read were not great. I decided to make my own because I love projects and I know it will give my ski partner some good laughs.

I got the inspiration from these 2 videos

https://www.instructables.com/DIY-carbon-heated-gloves-1/

and

I used a glue gun to secure the tape onto the gloves and used thin copper shims folded over to secure the carbon tape to the battery pack wires. The batteries I used are generic Lithium 3.7v 18650. I used 2 cell battery packs, male and female dc connectors (all these items easily found on ebay).

The end result was a huge success. I used them for a week skiing at Lake Tahoe. They kept my hand warm and cozy for 1 1/2 to 2 hours before changing up the battery packs. The battery packs fit under my jacket sleeve. It was not without too much trouble turning the on-off switch and changing up the packs while on the chair lift.

I will make another pair, (version 2) for next year with a few improvements.

Some things that I will change is to use that silver glue to secure the wires instead of the folded copper shimming. When laying the tape onto the thumb make sure tape it place at from and back of thumb symmetrically. I glued not quite right and side of thumb was a little cold.

DIY Carbon Tape Heated Gloves/mittens v1

Carbon Tape ( around 6.5 ft per glove ) - obtained from https://www.carbonheater.us/ (contact is Vladimir)

Gloves - they should be thin enough to fit inside mittens and surface should be smooth not furry and wooly

18650 Lithium ion 3.7 v 2000ma (min) batteries

Wire tails with Male and female wire connectors

Copper foil or thin shim material

Soldering iron and solder

Hot glue

I used hot glue and gun to secure the carbon tape to this first pair of gloves. I found that this was not the best choice as the glue was hot and unforgiving if you made a mistake. The video links show how to lay out the carbon take.

My next pair of gloves will have a different layout.

  • I will probably use a little less tape maybe 5 ft per glove
  • before laying tape on thumb, wear the glove and mark with a sharpy a line that is symetrical to the thumb front and back. Use this line a guide to lay the tape. You want the tape at front and back of thumb to be equally apart.
  • I would change the tape layout so that the battery connections are on the outside of the hand.
