Captain America Sneakers

I was surfing the internet one day and then I came across avengers toms. I was inspired and really wanted to design and paint my own pair of shoes. You can wear them on the 4th of July, for a halloween costume, or just for fun!

So here is the process of making my Captain America toms!

Gather Your Materials

You'll need:
  • Red, white, and blue fabric paint
  • Fabric medium if you have acrylic paint
  • Various paint brush sizes
  • Detergent to clean the shoes (if they're old)
  • Sharpie to draw design
  • Paper towel

Design Your Shoe

I prefer using the computer rather than sketching, so I used pixlr to "paint" the shoe. I used the magic wand tool to select certain strips and the paint bucket to fill in the colors.

Clean Your Shoes, Remove the Shoe Laces, and Stuff Them

As you can see, the shoes I used were just a little dirty. I cleaned them quickly by taking some detergent and scrubbing the shoe. I then took some water and took off the remaining detergent.

Remove the shoe laces and stuff the shoes with tissue paper or paper towel. It's important to stuff the shoe so you have a nice firm canvas. Once all of this is done, let the shoes dry! If you're impatient like me, you're sharpie will leak like mine did.

If you have new shoes, then you're good to go.

Draw Out the Design

Grab your sharpie and get drawing! Do your best to make nice clean lines. Don't worry too much about messing up, because the pain will cover it up.

Mix Your Paint

If you're like me and only had acrylic paint, mix fabric medium to thin it out. You add 3 parts acrylic paint to one part fabric medium. Take your brush and mix well.

I chose to mix one paint at a time to prevent the paint from drying up.

Paint the Shoe

Once you've mixed your color, get to painting. Use different brush sizes to get the desired effect. Example, if you need to get as close to the line as possible, it's best to use a thin and flat brush. I first did the blue, then red, then white. You can go in whatever order you'd like. It's not super important.

When painting the white, I chose to paint the band as well, but that's up to you.

Done

There ya go. Now you've got your own pair of Captain America sneakers! Now's the time to go and show them off to your friends!
