Captain America Floral Tribute Shield
In December 2020 I sadly and suddenly lost my younger brother, in his late 40s, he was a massive Superhero fan and particularly loved Marvel movies. When it came to planning the Superhero themed funeral someone mentioned flowers which hadn't crossed my mind. Flowers for a funeral can be massively expensive so I decided to put my love of papercraft into action and make something myself.
Note that Marvel is Trademark and Copyright of Disney, do not make this for commercial sales.
This technique could be modified to any template such as MOM, DAD, LOVE etc. You just need to get the base correct.
Supplies
To make this you will need:
- Thick cardboard I used 0.75 micron, no reason why you can't recycle an old cereal box
- Blue, white and red card. I used 220gsm, number of sheets will depend on how dense you want the individual flowers and the size of you card.
- A petal template in 3 different sizes
- Sharp scalpel or craft knife, scissors
- Cutting mat
- Tacky glue (Aleenes original or something similar), PVA glue can be used but it can often make the card too moist potentially spoiling the appearance
- Embossing mat
Optional
- Sponge and embossing stylus, ALTERNATIVES
- Silhouette Cameo cutting machine or similar, although flowers can be cut by hand
Prepare the Base
Cut a circle from the cardboard, mine is 200mm
Mark out the inner circles of the shield, or print the above image and glue to the base it acts as a good guide where to place the flowers.
Cut Out the Flowers
You will need 3 different sized petals for each flower, this example used the below sizes
- 30mm for outer
- 25mm for inner
- 12mm for flower centre
Rough template above
Curl the Petals
The flowers are 2 dimensional at the minute so we need to make them 3 dimensional, this is done by placing the paper petals on the embossing mat and gently pressing in the middle with the embossing tool, and spin in circles until the centre curls up. If you don't have an embossing tool cut the sharp end from a cocktail stick and use that.
Once curled they need to be glued together, take the medium sized petal and glue it to the largest turning it slightly so the petals overlap. Repeat this for the smallest petal gluing to the medium.
Glue Flowers to Base
Finally starting in the centre glue each flower individually to the base, try to bunch them as close together as possible to give the effect of real flowers on a wreath. Repeat until the wreath is full.
I added an extra star in the middle with my brothers name.
