Canned Minced Beef & Onion With English Dumplings
This is a nice cheap and hearty meal that will warm you on those cold winter days. I will show you how to make a quick and easy canned minced beef and English dumpling stew. You can use any vegetables you have to hand or any other canned food for that matter.
Supplies
- You will need
- Ovenproof Dish
- Large Baking Bowl
- Measuring Scales
- Saucepan or Frying pan
- Large Spoon
- Sharp Knife
- Butter Knife
INGREDIENTS
- 2 Cans of Minced beef & Onion (392g per can) (You can also use any other canned food instead)
- 250g Plain Flour
- 1 Teaspoon of Baking Powder
- Pinch of Salt
- Block of Butter (120g)
- Salt and Pepper
- Vegetables (Optional) I used a bell pepper
- Cold Water
Making the Dumplings
- In a large Baking Bowl add 250g of Plain Flour, 120g of Butter, 1tsp of Baking Powder, and a Pinch of salt. (You can also add a tsp of herbs.)
- With your fingers rub the mixture together until it resembles Bread crumbs. Add Cold water until it forms a soft but not tacky dough - I used around 6tbs of cold water, (If unsure add a little bit of water at a time, until your dough is formed.)
- Once your dough is formed divide it into Five Segments. With your Hands Shape them into balls (Roughly around the size of a ping pong ball.) then set aside.
Prepare the Canned Food
- If you're using any veggies then dice them into small squares, I had a bell pepper so I used that. (I usually use whatever I have to hand.)
- In a Saucepan (or frying pan) add a knob of butter and heat over medium heat, once melted add your vegetables then saute them until slightly browned and soft, then set aside.
- (If not using veggies Skip Here) In a saucepan heat the minced beef & onion until hot and season with salt and pepper to taste, (add your vegetables now and mix them in) set aside.
Cooking the Stew
- Pour your minced beef & onion into the Ovenproof dish.
- Now Take your Dumplings and place them in the minced beef & onion, then put the lid on. (If you do not have a lid then use Aluminium foil to cover it.)
- Place in the oven and cook for approximately 20 minutes. After 20 minutes remove the lid and cook for another 5 minutes. The dumplings should be puffed up and fluffy-looking.
Serve and Enjoy
This recipe is super flexible, so feel free to add whatever you want and tweak it however you like. Experiment with it and see what you come up with.
