How to Make a Candy Wrapper Chain

Make a Starburst Chain

This is just a silly little thing that you can do with your candy wrappers if you're bored. In this Instructable, I'm using Starburst wrappers, but I've also done this with gum wrappers and a few other random candy wrappers. You should be able to make this same wrapper chain with just about any kind of rectangular candy wrapper. The pictures that I'm including will have some additional helpful info, so make sure to refer to them too!

If you would like to see a video of me building one of these wrapper chains, you can check that out here:

Supplies

Unwrap the Candy

This is pretty obvious, but the first thing you need to do is get that darn candy out of the wrapper. You can't let it go to waste, so you better eat it (or you could even have someone help you with that part.) If you happen to tear the wrapper a little bit, that shouldn't be an issue. If you happen to tear the wrapper a lot, just unwrap another one and try again. Practice makes perfect!

First Fold

For the first fold, figure out which length of the wrapper is the longest, and fold the wrapper in half length-wise. After the first fold, is should still be the same long in the longest direction. Also, and this is important to remember for later, after the fold there will be... like a side with a spine and a side with 2 flaps. (I hope that makes sense! Check the pictures for more clarification.)

Second/Third Fold

The second fold will be the same as the first. Depending on the original width of the wrapper, you may or may not need to do a third fold just like this. When making these wrapper chains with gum wrappers, 2 folds like this were perfect. With these Starburst wrappers, a 3rd fold was necessary. Keep track of the spines and the flaps. they're important for the next fold!

The Next Fold

This is the part where it starts to get hard to explain. For the next fold, instead of folding it length-wise, you want to fold it in half to make it shorter instead of more narrow. But there are 2 ways you can fold it... forwards, or backwards. This is the part that's specifically hard for me to describe. Before folding, look at where the spines and flaps from the previous folds are. For this fold, you want to fold it so that the flaps will end up all on the inside of the fold and the outside of the fold won't have any flaps.

The Final 2 Folds

For the final 2 folds, you want to fold each leg of the folded wrapper in half individually, but also in towards the center of the wrapper. After both of the legs are folded in, this link of the chain is complete. Keep track of which side shows the flaps from the earlier folds. You'll want to avoid those flaps when joining the links together.

Joining the Links Together

If you only have one link so far, go ahead and make another by following all of the previous steps with another wrapper. To join the links, simply slide the folded legs of one link through the folds of the other link. But make sure the flaps that you're keeping track of are facing the knees. If the folded wrapper doesn't fit because it's too wide, you may need to go back to Step 3 and do another length-wise fold.

And That's It!

You can repeat these steps as many times as you would like with as many wrappers as you want to add to your chain. I don't know if there is any purpose for these wrapper chains, but if you come up with any then I would love to hear about your ideas. And feel free to share any pictures of the wrapper chains that you make!
