Candy Train
- These Candy Trains are easy to make and everyone loves them. You can make about 10 or more in about 20 minutes.
- I have been making these Candy Trains as presents for almost 20 years. Kids love to eat 'em, adults love to display 'em! You can give these as presents or hang them as ornaments!
- They are easy to make and you can put a whole bunch together fairly quickly (assembly line-style) once you've practice on a couple of them.
Buy the Candy
First step is to buy all the candy. I buy in bags, it's cheaper, and you can put together approx. 15 to 20 trains at a time. I bought mine at Target / Walmart.
Here is a list of what you need:
- Rolls of Lifesavers
- Peppermint Swirls (get the ones that are in twisted plastic wrap)
- York Peppermint Patties
- Hershey's Miniatures
- Rollo individual rolls
- Butterfinger Bell (or Hershey's Kisses)
- Reeses mini peanut-butter cup
- Snickers individual mini (or Brachs Caramel Square - looks better)
Tools:
- A large workplace
- Hot glue gun and plenty of Non-Toxic glue sticks
WARNING: DO NOT USE ANY GLUE WITH TOXIC INGREDIENTS such as Super glue, Gorilla glue, Epoxies, etc... The glue might seep into the candy which could lead to disasterous consequences :-(

Lay Out the Pieces
Lay out all the pieces for each train from bottom (closest to you) to top in the following order:
2 Hershey's Miniatures
1 roll Lifesaver
4 Peppermint Swirls
2 York Peppermint Patty's
1 Reeses Miniature Cup
1 Rollo Roll
1 Hershey's miniature
1 Butterfinger Bell (or 1 Hershey's Kiss)
1 Brachs Caramel Square ( or 1 Snickers Miniature)
You can lay out 3 or more sets as pictured. I like to make 4 at a time, this makes it go faster.

Assembly Step 1 - the Chassis
Step 1:
Put the 2 Hershey's Miniatures together end to end and put a bead of glue down the seam.
tip:
- If you work on 3 or 4 trains at a time assembly line style, once you finish gluing the last train, the first train is ready for the next step!
Assembly Step 2 - the Boiler
Step 2: Put a bead of glue down one side of the Lifesavers roll and immediately place on top of the two Hershey's miniatures.
tips:
-Put the glue on the ingredients panel so you can read the big words "Lifesavers" on both sides.
- Offset the Lifesavers roll so that one wedge end of the miniatures will look like a "cow-catcher"

Assembly Step 3
Step 3:
Once the glue is dry (this takes seconds) lay the assembly on one side.

Assembly Step 4 - the Wheels
Step 4:
Glue the wheels to the side of the train.
Flip them over and repeat for the other side.
tips:
- Put a half-inch bead of glue on the edge of the Hershey's miniature and side of the Lifesaver roll for each Peppermint Swirl, use an inch of glue for the Peppermint Patty (you can see what I'm talking about in the 2nd and 3rd pictures of this step)
- Glue dries quickly so you gotta work fast!

Assembly Step 5 - the Top Pieces
Step 5:
Glue the top pieces.
tip:
- Put a circle of glue on the bottom of each piece and immediately put them on the train, one candy piece at a time.

Finishing Touches
All done!
tips:
- I like to stick a gift sticker on the bottom of the train where you can write to whom and from.
- When they are all done, I use a pair of small scissors to trim the hot glue gun "strings"

Final Thoughts
With a little creativity, you can make other fine Candy Creations using the same basic steps!
Here is a Candy Biplane that I also make (this will be my next instructable!!!)

Have a great time making these and enjoy!!!
