Candle Holder of the Goddess Hylia - Zelda - Portavelas De La Diosa Hylia

I've been thinking for a while about making this project of a candle holder with the statue of the Goddess Hylia from Zelda (I'm attaching a photo in case you're not a fan and don't know her) because I thought something like that would look great, and everything I saw was made in 3D so putting a candle near it wasn't an option, and when I saw this contest I decided to do it and at the same time create my first Instructable ^^

Hace tiempo llevaba pensando en hacer este proyecto de un porta velas con la estatua de la Diosa Hylia del Zelda (adjunto una foto por si no eres fan y no la conoces) porque pensaba que se vería genial algo así, y todo lo que vi estaba hecho en 3D por lo que acercarle una vela no era una opción, y al ver este concurso me decidí a hacerlo y de paso crear mi primer Instructable ^^

To make this project we will need:

·A reference to work with, I drew one that was more or less the size I needed looking at some references on the internet

·Air-drying modeling clay, I used a 750gr package for this statue

·A candle of the size we usually use to make sure they fit perfectly

·Acrylic paints and brushes to give it color

·Some wooden sticks, we will use them to give consistency to the protruding areas, so maybe you can also use some thick wire if you prefer

·Aluminum foil (to use as interior filling and not make it solid but you could make it solid if you want)

*And if you are more careful than me, you will not need the two-component epoxy putty, but since I used it I will teach you how to fix the imperfections ;)

Para hacer este proyecto necesitaremos:

·Una referencia con la que trabajar, yo dibujé una del tamaño que más o menos necesitaba fijándome en algunas referencias de internet

·Pasta para modelar de secado al aire, yo utilice para ésta estatua un paquete de 750gr

·Una vela del tamaño que solamos utilizar para asegurarnos de que encajan perfectamente

·Pinturas acrílicas y pinceles para darle color

·Unos palillos de madera, los utilizaremos para darle consistencia a las zonas sobresalientes, asique quizás también te sirva algún alambre grueso si lo prefieres

·Papel de aluminio (para usar de relleno interior y no hacerla maciza pero podrías hacerla solida si así lo deseas)

*Y si eres mas cuidadoso que yo, no necesitaras la masilla Epoxi de dos componentes, pero como yo la utilicé te enseñare a arreglar los desperfectos ;)

As we took care to measure the candle when drawing our reference on paper, we will now make a paste with the aluminum foil that we see will fit in the core of our statue.

Later we will cover it with a layer of modeling clay, at least one finger thick approximately, (we want it to be hollow, but also resistant)

Como al momento de dibujar nuestra referencia en el papel hemos tenido cuidado de medir la vela, ahora haremos una amasijo con el papel de aluminio que veamos que quepa en el núcleo de nuestra estatua.

Posteriormente lo forraremos con una capa pasta de modelar, de al menos un dedo de grosor aproximadamente, (queremos que sea hueca, pero también resistente)

Once we get to this point we will make the arms, as you can see there is not much mystery in making them because they are simple shapes, the trick is to stick them to the body (remember the two-component epoxy putty) this is where I failed, let me explain:

It turns out that in order for the pieces to weld well the ideal thing is to scrape them a little on the internal parts that you are going to join (make some lines, some grooves...) and mix in a glass a little water with a little modeling paste to make a kind of liquid putty, apply it with a brush in those areas to join ;)

I can't attach images of this because I learned it too late, but now you have learned from my mistakes, anyway later I will show you how to solve this problem

Una vez llegados a este punto haremos los brazos, como veis no tiene mucho misterio hacerlos pues son unas formas sencillas, el truco esta en pegarlas al cuerpo (recuerdas la masilla epoxi de dos componentes) aquí es donde yo fallé, te explico:

Resulta que para que se suelden bien las piezas lo ideal es rasparlas un poco por las partes internas que vayas a unir (hacerles unas rayitas, unos surcos...) y mezclando en un vasito un poco de agua con un poco de pasta de modelar para hacer como una masilla liquida aplicarlo con un pincel en esas zonas a unir ;)

No puedo adjuntarte imágenes de esto pues lo aprendí demasiado tarde, pero ahora has aprendido de mis errores, igualmente luego te mostrare como solucionar este problema

Now we will make an oval circle about the size of a coin to make the face and then a pair of planks to make the clothes that fall under the arms.

Once each thing is in place we will soften the back of the planks with our fingers so that the shape blends and we will leave the sharp edge in front.

If you have areas that you want to soften you can help yourself with a brush moistened with water, but as for this project we want to imitate an ancient statue carved in stone it is great that it has roughness and irregularities, play with this in mind and find the balance according to your judgment ;)

Ahora haremos un circulo ovalado del tamaño de una moneda aproximadamente para hacer la cara y después una pareja de planchas para hacerle la ropa que le cae bajo los brazos.

Una vez con cada cosa en su sitio suavizaremos la parte de atrás de las placas con los dedos para que se funda la forma y dejaremos el borde filoso delante.

Si tuvieras zonas que deseases suavizar puedes ayudarte con un pincel humedecido en agua, pero como para este proyecto queremos imitar una antigua estatua tallada en piedra esta genial que tenga rugosidades e irregularidades, juega teniendo esto en mente y encuentra el equilibrio según tu juicio ;)

By now we should have the statue in the shape we want and we will move on to making the candle holder:

First we will make a small roll and place it around our candle to check the size and then we will present it in front of our goddess in the place where we would like it to end up.

With the help of a pencil we will draw the outline of the statue next to that of our candle holder to create a custom platform that will become the base of our piece.

Para este punto ya debemos tener la estatua con la forma que deseamos y pasaremos a hacer el porta velas:

Primero haremos un rulito y lo colocaremos alrededor de nuestra vela para comprobar el tamaño y posteriormente lo presentaremos frente a nuestra diosa en el Iugar donde nos gustaría que quede finalmente.

Con la ayuda de un lápiz dibujaremos el contorno de la estatua junto al de nuestro porta velas para crear una plataforma a medida que se convertirá en la base de nuestra pieza.

Now we will give some structural integrity to our statue: we will check the length of our sticks, which should go through our protruding areas and be inserted into the body of our piece to prevent it from breaking or falling off later. (We can do the same with the arms if we are not sure that they will weld properly)

Ahora dotaremos de algo de integridad estructural a nuestra estatua: comprobaremos la longitud de nuestros palillos, los cuales deberán atravesar nuestras zonas salientes e insertarse en el cuerpo de nuestra pieza para evitar que posteriormente se pueda partir o descolgarse. (podemos hacer lo mismo en los brazos si no nos fiamos de que se suelden debidamente)

Before continuing, we will join the base with the rest of the statue with the help of our fingers, and with the help of a brush moistened with water we will smooth out all the joints and cracks that we do not want to be seen.

Antes de continuar; uniremos con ayuda de nuestros dedos la base con el resto de la estatua, y con ayuda de un pincel humedecido en agua alisaremos todas las uniones y grietas que no queramos que se vean.

We will continue making the wings of our goddess, we will make a triangle of the appropriate size so that they stick out a little on the sides and we will pinch the lower area.

Then we will stick them to the body in the same way that we did with the arms but now it is mandatory to reinforce them with the sticks so that they do not fall from the weight until they dry and with the help of a stick we will draw the wings.

In addition, we will make a small curl to make the nose and with the help of our fingers and nails we will model the face (you can help yourself with the tip of a stick for the fine areas of the eyes)

Continuaremos haciendo las alas de nuestra diosa, haremos un triangulo del tamaño apropiado para que sobresalgan un poco por los costados y le daremos un pellizco a la zona inferior.

Después las pegaremos al cuerpo de la misma manera que hicimos con los brazos pero ahora es obligatorio reforzar con los palitos para que no se caigan del peso hasta que sequen y con la ayuda de un palito le dibujaremos las alas.

Además haremos un pequeño rulito para hacer la nariz y con ayuda de nuestras dedos y uñas le modelaremos la cara (puedes ayudarte con la punta de un palillo para las zonas finas de los ojos)

At this point we should have let it dry, in theory it takes 24 hours, but depending on the size of the piece and the conditions of your environment it can be longer, in my case it took about 72 hours for it to dry completely (you will notice if it is dry because the color changes to a lighter white)

As you can see in the images you can see cracks in the joints of the arms and in the joints of the candle holder, and here I will show you how to fix it with the two-component epoxy putty:

The one I used comes in a tube with the two components together, you just have to cut a piece, knead it until it is mixed evenly and with some strips we fill the joints, ... once dry we can start painting :)

Llegados a este punto lo tendríamos que haber dejado secar, en teoría son 24h lo que tarda, pero según el tamaño de la pieza y las condiciones de tu entorno pueden ser mas, en mi caso tardé unas 72h para que secase completamente (te darás cuenta si esta seco porque cambia el color a un blanco mas claro)

Como podrás comprobar en las imágenes se ven grietas en las uniones de los brazos y en las uniones del portavelas, y aquí te enseñare como arreglarlo con la masilla epoxi de dos componentes:

La que yo utilicé va en un tubo con los dos componentes juntos, solo hay que cortar un trozo, amasarlo hasta que se mezcle de manera homogénea y con unas tiras vamos rellenando las juntas, ...una vez seco podremos empezar a pintar :)

In my case I chose to give it a first coat of medium grey and then with that colour as a base I added a bit of black and brown to go over it without covering everything, so that the changes in tone are noticeable and it isn’t monotonous, remember that it should look like a stone, then I added a bit of green and with a very dry brush and very little paint I gave it some details to make it look like mossy areas (at this point depending on your painting skills you can use your means, maybe painting it with an airbrush would be great)

Now all that’s left is to let it dry, light your candle, and let it fill your room and your life with good vibes!

En mi caso opte por dar una primera capa de gris medio y después con ese color como base le agregue un poco de negro y de marrón para dar una pasada por encima sin cubrir todo, para que se noten cambios de tono y no sea monótono, recordemos que debe parecer una piedra, luego añadí un poco de verde y con el pincel muy seco y muy poca pintura le di algunos detalles para aparentar zonas musgosas (en este punto según tu habilidad con la pintura puedes valerte de tus medios, quizás pintarlo con aerógrafo seria genial)

Ya solo queda dejarlo secar, ponerle tu velita, y dejar que inunde tu estancia y tu vida de buenas vibras!
