Can Lantern

This beautiful looking lantern is ideal for a nice summer evening with a glass of wine on your terrace or balcony - or you can use it as a thoughtful DIY.

It's DIY, upcycling and you can customize the style as you like - ideal for a nice and thoughtful gesture.

Supplies

  • Tin can of size of your choice
  • Nails - ideally two different sizes
  • Hammer
  • Gloves

Step 1: Tin Can Preparation

Next time you are using any kitchen supplies from a can, keep the can - sizes can vary, if you are grouping a few together, different sizes make the final result look even better. Cans without synthetic or plastic coating on the inside are especially good because the heat of a candle could melt it (it still looks good but it could smell a bit weird).

Remove the label and any adhesive residues

Fill the can with water and freeze it. This stabilizes the whole can when you use the nail to make the holes

Step 2: Pattern Implementation

Use hammer and nails to implement the pattern of your choice. The gloves will keep your hands from freezing when you hold the can ;-)

You can use different patterns of your choice: random, geometric, leafs and flowers, hearts, ... There is no limit to your imagination! It helps to draw the design first on a piece of paper and stick it to the tin can to guide you (not necessary if you feel totally confident in your artistic talent, of course). I added a picture which should give you an idea how to implement more complex patterns with a pattern.

Finish by taking care of any sharp edges in order to keep it safe. You can also use any colours to further style the lantern.

Fix a wire through two holes in order to hang the lantern somewhere.

Step 3: Enjoy!
