Campfire Cinnamon Buns on a Stick

Summertime is meant for endless fun, joyful and messy outside activities. Not only for children, but also for us - adults ourselves. It's so nice to put aside our work duties and step into a meaningful relaxation time in the countryside next to a warm fireplace. And I think I have in mind some amazingly easy yet delicious project for your next campfire night!

This is very easy standard yeast dough recipe that only requires ingridients everyone has at home. Also, you can easily spice things up by adding choco chips or mini marshmallows in the dough or make it vegan without any problem!

For this project you will need:

  • 400 g (3 1/4 cups) flour
  • 11 g (2,5 tsp) dry yeast
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 1/2 tbsp cinnamon
  • 300 ml (1 1/4 cups) milk (plant milk for vegan option)
  • 100 g (1/2 cup) sugar
  • 1 tbsp cinnamon
  • 2 tbsp soft butter (margarine for vegan option)
  • 8 sharpened wooden sticks about 1,5 cm (0,6 in) diameter (see my note down below)*

*Always remember to use sticks only from trees you recognise. Some safe options are - birch, hazelnut, dogwood, ash, maple, elm, sallow.

Make the Dough!

In a large bowl mix flour, yeast, sugar and cinnamon with a spoon. Then add milk and mix until it starts to hold together. Then continue kneading with your hands about 10 minutes until dough is smooth and forms a ball.

Cover with a cloth or kitchen towel and let chill in the sun for about 1 hour.

Prepare the Sticks!

Find some edible sticks in nearby forest and cut about an armlenght long (about 80 cm) and 1,5 cm thick.

Then trim the end sharp with a knife!

Make the Buns!

When dough is risen, divide it in 8 pieces. Roll each piece into a long snake. Then roll the dough on the stick starting from the sharpened top. Secure the end of the dough by firmly pressing.

In a small flat tray mix sugar and cinnamon.

Then brush the dough with soft butter and roll it in the cinnamon sugar!

Let the Baking Begin!

Take one or two bread sticks and place over the campfire while turning it nonstop. It will help bake it evenly and reduce the risk of burning. Cinnamon buns are ready in about 5 minutes or when the sugar is starting to caramelise in golden colour!


Do not place cinnamon buns in direct flames - it's better to hold it a little bit on the side so it bakes more slowly.
