Cable Knit Sweater (size Small for Teenage Girl) (written for Hand Knitting)

DEAR READERS OR POTENTIAL SWEATER MAKERS!! THIS PATTERN IS BY NO MEANS PERFECT SO IF YOU FIND A MISTAKE PLEASE TELL ME SO I CAN FIX IT!! Additionally, this is the hand-knitting version of this pattern, if you are interested in the full machine knitting pattern for this sweater, message me and I will send you the pattern.

I originally made this for my friend Biz (Elizabeth) on my brother KH-270 electronic for the sake of time since I am a full time high school student; however, I rewrote the pattern for hand-knitting so those who don't have a knitting machine (antique from my aunt Kathy) can still make this wonderful article of clothing for the fall/winter months.

• Making a slip knot
• Casting On
• Knit stitch
• Purl stitch
• Cables (easy ones)
• Knit 2 together
• Increasing
• Binding off

• Pull out a length of yarn from your ball/skein
• make a loop
• put that loop over a section of the yarn
• pull the middle piece through the loop (the section of yarn you put the loop over)
• keep pulling the middle section of yarn while holding the tail and the working yarn (yarn attached to the ball/skein)
• You have just made a slip knot!!
• If you are knitting a bigger project remember you will need a longer tail! The number of stitches you can make is dependent on how long your tail is. So if you are making this sweater, leave a long tail so that you will have enough yarn to cast on with.

• Acquire your knitting needles and slip knot
• put the slip knot onto the knitting needle
• tighten the slip knot by pulling the yarn that makes the slip knot smaller
• now hold the knitting needle in your right hand
• take your left hand and with your pointer finger and thumb separate the tail and working yarn
• hold the rest of the yarn with your remaining fingers
• pull the needle down slightly so that there is tension on your yarn
• with a counter clockwise motion, turn/rotate the needle so that it catches the farthest left string from the thumb (the outside of the loop on the thumb)
• with a clockwise motion, turn/rotate the needle so that it catches the left loop (on the inside) from the pointer finger
• with that loop still on the needle, take the needle back through the loop on the thumb
• tighten the stitch created by pulling slightly on both the tail and working yarn
• You have just made one stitch!! Repeat the steps within the ** ** until you have the desired amount of stitches

• After all the stitches are cast on, you need to turn the work so that the working yarn (the yarn attached to the ball/skein) is on the right side
• Acquire the other knitting needle
• **Insert the right needle into the first stitch on the left needle (through the bottom of the stitch)
• Wrap the yarn around the right handed needle only, counter clockwise
• Bring the right handed needle down so that the tip of the needle will catch the loop you have just made on the right handed needle
• bring the loop through the old stitch on the left handed needle
• slip the old stitch off of the left handed needle, if you knitted the stitch correctly, the old stitch should be supported by the new stitch and will not unravel,

• After you have completed the knit stitches on the previous row, you need to turn the work so that the working yarn is on the right side of the knitting
• **Insert the right handed needle into the top of the first stitch on the left handed needle (through the top of the stitch)
• Wrap the yarn around the right handed needle only, counter clockwise
• Bring the right handed needle up so that the tip of the needle will catch the loop you have just made on the right handed needle
• bring the loop through the old stitch on the left handed needle
• slip the old stitch off of the left handed needle, if you purled the stitch correctly, the old stitch should be supported by the new stitch and will not unravel slip the old stitch off of the left handed needle, if you knitted the stitch correctly, the old stitch should be supported by the new stitch and will not unravel**

• Repeat the steps within the ** ** until all of the desired stitches are purled

• Knit to where the cable begins
• Acquire cable needle
• insert the hook of the cable needle into the first stitch purl-wise (as to slip)
• Slip the first stitch onto the cable needle
• insert the hook of the cable needle into the second stitch purl-wise (as to slip)
• Slip the second stitch onto the cable needle
• hold the cable needle in front of the work (without moving it from where you were slipping stitches)
• Knit two stitches from main work
• bring the two stitches on the cable needle to the longer end of the hook without twisting the stitches
• Knit the two stitches from the cable needle (remember this is will feel like a very tight stitch)
• remove cable needle from the work
• (for the pattern) Knit 1, Repeat cable work

• Get to the part in your work where you need to decrease a stitch
• Insert the right needle into 2 stitches on the left needle
• yarn over as if to knit
• knit both stitches together as 1 stitch
• Now both stitches are knitted together and you have decreased one stitch

• Get to the part in your work where you have to increase
• Hold your needles so that you can easily see a bar going through the two stitches
• insert the right needle into that stitch
• yarn over as if to knit
• knit the bar as a stitch
• continue on with your work

• Knit until it is time to end your work/ knitted piece
• Knit the first to stitches of the row
• pass the bottom stitch over the top stitch (the 1st stitch over the 2nd stitch)
• knit the next stitch
• pass the bottom stitch over the top stitch (the 2nd stitch over the 3rd stitch)
• knit the next stitch
• Continue in this fashion until the last 2 stitches
• pass the second to last stitch over the last stitch
• pull the last stitch so that it is now a big loop
• cut the yarn leaving a long tail (especially long for the pattern since this is what you'll be seaming the sweater with)
• You now have a beautiful edge to your work that will make picking up stitches for the neck line very easy

• approximately 600-700 grams of worsted weight yarn
• standard gauge knitting machine (optional) (what I used for time sake, however, pattern is written for hand knitting)
• double pointed knitting needles (to knit the neck)
• Size 10 knitting needles (if hand-knitting)
• Darning Needle
• PATIENCE

Make 2

Cast on 69 sts

1. K1 *P1 K2* until last 2 sts P1 K1

Repeat Row 1 until there are 12 rows of ribbing

(Reset row counter to 1)

1. K1 increase 1 knit the rest of the row (70sts)

2. Purl

3. Knit

4. Purl

5. K3 *slip 2 sts onto cable needle hold in front, K2 sts from main work, K2 from cable needle, K1* repeat until last 3 sts, K3

6. Purl

7. Knit

8. Purl

9. Knit

10. Purl

11. K3 *slip 2 sts onto cable needle hold in front, K2 sts from main work, K2 from cable needle, K1* repeat until last 3 sts, K3

Repeat rows 6-11 until there are approximately 59 rows or 11 rows of cables (or size to obtain gauge)

Decreases: approximately (49 rows)

(reset Row counter to 1)

Row 1: K1 Knit 2 together, continue in pattern until last 3 sts, knit 2 together K1

**Knit 3 rows in pattern (cables)

Row n: K1 Knit 2 together, continue in pattern until last 3 sts, knit 2 together K1**

(repeat until there are 50 sts left on your needles)

** Knit 2 rows in pattern Row n: Knit 2 together, continue in pattern until last 3 sts, knit 2 together K1**

(repeat until there are 22 sts left on your needles)

Bind off (about 108 rows without ribbing)

Sleeves

Cast on 30 sts

1. K1 *P1 K2* until last 2 sts P1 K1

Repeat Row 1 until there are 12 rows of ribbing

(Reset row counter to 1)

1. K1 increase 1 st, knit until last st, increase 1 st, K1

2. Purl

3. Knit

4. P1 increase 1 st, purl until last st, increase 1 st P1

5. K3 *slip 2 sts onto cable needle hold in front, K2 sts from main work, K2 from cable needle, K1* repeat until last 3 sts, K3

6. Purl

Repeat rows 1-6 until there are 70 sts, or you have reached the desired length of your sleeve.

Decreases: approximately (49 rows)

(reset Row counter to 1)

Row 1: K1 Knit 2 together, continue in pattern until last 3 sts, knit 2 together K1

**Knit 4 rows in pattern (cables)

Row n: K1 Knit 2 together, continue in pattern until last 3 sts, knit 2 together K1**

(repeat until there are 50 sts left on your needles)

** Knit 2 rows in pattern Row n: Knit 2 together, continue in pattern until last 3 sts, knit 2 together K1**

(repeat until there are 22 sts left on your needles)

Bind off

Take a darning needle and an extra piece of yarn. Sew the sleeves to the torso as in the picture. A whip stitch will suffice, unless you are an expert seamstress then you may use any seaming technique you choose. Then fold the sweater and sew up the side of the sweater and the side of the arm making sure to add more yarn under the arms for wear and tear.

Take size 10 double pointed needles

Pick up 1 st for every st you bound off in the top of the front, back and two sleeves, using a different needle for each section. This does not need to be exact, there may be 1 or 2 stitches that are missed in the process, the important thing it to not have to many holes as to not have holes in your neckline (no holey necks here!)

After you have picked up your stitches you should have about 80-88 depending upon your judgement of where you picked up stitches.

Then knit a K2 P1 rib all the way around your neck for 6 rows

Bind Off LOOSELY!! You'll want to be able to fit your head through this beauty of a sweater

Weave in ends

Weave in all of your ends! Nobody like those pesky little yarns that hang out everywhere, so hide them and make sure they are secured. This way when you are boogieing in your new sweater, they wont accidentally come undone, and unravel all of your hard work.

Sit on the couch in your new sweater and marvel at how awesome you are. You just finished a cable knit sweater! And its beautiful! Now sit back and relax with a cup of tea and your favorite show, (i.e. Buffy the vampire slayer, Outlander, or Doctor Who), and let your hands rest!!
