CNC Settlers of Catan
I am a 10th grader at Illiana Christian High School and I'm currently taking the class Computer Integrated Manufacturing which is why I made this project. For this project, I decided to create my own Settlers of Catan board game.
Supplies
For this project, you will need Fusion 360, Lightburn, a CNC machine, and an 18"x16" piece of wood.
Creating Your First Sketch
First, you will want to sketch out your tile pieces. Create a sketch and create a Hexagon. Then you will want to copy this hexagon so that you will have a total of 6 tile pieces.
Designing the Tiles
Now you will want to sketch out different designs on all of the tiles to represent different resources. When creating these use the simple line and the fit point spline. After you sketch out all of the different resources project them all into one sketch if you made a few different sketches. Then we will be able to laser cut all of the tile pieces out. select the final sketch and export it as a .dxf file.
Cutting Them Out
To cut all of the pieces out you will want to export the sketch into light burn. Then change the color of all the inner materials to blue and all of the hexagon's colors to black. Then make sure to change the speed of the blue to 150 and power to 80 and the black speed to 15 and power to 100. This way it traces the material and cuts through the hexagon. Make sure that you move the pieces closer together so you can save some room on the wood. Then you can send this to your machine and cut them out. Then you can send this to your laser cutter and cut out the pieces.
Creating the Board
First, you will want to create a new sketch. Then create a bigger hexagon for the board. extrude that up by .5 inches. Then you will want to sketch out more hexagons on top and extrude them down for the tile pieces.
Manufacturing Your Board
Now, you will want to click design at the top and go down to the manufacturing tab. Now, you will want to create a new setup. For this project make the origin at the center of the board. Then, select 2d adaptive clearing and select all of the tile pieces. Make sure that you pick the 1/4" flat-end mill as your tool and change the stepdown to .125. You can find this in the passes section. Then, select 2d contour and select the bottom edge of your part. Also, make sure that you change the stepdown again for this. Now you can select post-processing and save this onto a flash drive.
CNC the Game
Now you are ready to CNC out your game. First, you will want to go and get your board of wood and cut it down so it is 18" by 16". Make sure that you mark your origin as the center of the board. Then you can clamp it into your CNC machine. Now you can set the Z height and select your program.
