CARICATURE STATUETTES

I like to recognize people for their hobbies, sports achievements or careers by making small statues or trophies to commemorate special events. Pictured are a Jogger, Martial Arts Sensei, Video Gamer, Engineer and Aircraft Technician. The procedure is the same for all, so the steps I will explain are for the Jogger.

TOOLS/ MATERIALS

Scroll saw with fine blade

Close grained wood like MDF, Baltic Birch etc, at least 1/2” thick with no knots or voids

Any other objects you may want to include to enhance the sculpture

Sandpaper

Epoxy glue

Thin cardboard

Drill bit and drill

Spray primer and paints (metallic gold or bronze is best for the figure)

Download and trace the figure from the pdf,(It is on a 1" grid) or draw your own, or Google: "Scroll saw stick figures."There are literally hundreds on line that you can use for inspiration or adapt. Trace the figure to cardboard and make a template.

Trace the template to your wood. Drill the eye and carefully cut the figure out. Also, you may want to cut out a base from the same material. This can be square, rectangular or any desired shape. I used a sturdy metal container lid for the Jogger base and cut squares for the others. Sand everything, especially the edges, rounding over any sharp protrusions.

Spray with primer, sand lightly, then, when dry, spray the final colours.

Mix the epoxy and glue the statue (and any ancillary pieces you may have made to accompany it) to the base.
