Bunk Bed Shelf

One problem with college dorms are bunk beds. Bunk beds present many problems, a large one being storage. You aren't able to have a traditional bedside table when you are six feet off the ground. For my design, I decided to address this problem, by having a table that can attach to the side of your bed. It sits on the side of your bed frame, and uses tightening screws to keep it from falling off.

Inspiration

For the shelf, I wanted it large enough to be able to hold a large 16" laptop. For the tightening mechanism, I was reminded of a ping pong net I have. It uses screws to lock itself onto the table. If I could utilize this mechanism for my shelf, It would allow for it to fit different-sized beds.

Sketching

Next, I made a (very) rough sketch of my ideas. Just a basic design of how I want it to turn out.

Modeling the Desk

First, I made the shelf. It has elevated sides to make sure nothing falls off.

Next I modeled the screw. I rounded all of the edges just to make it look more finished. The thread stops about a quarter of an inch from the top, that will be used to attach it to the second part of the screw.

To make the tightening screw fit around the desk, you will need to print it in two pieces. This is the model of the second piece, which fits into the first.

Final Renders

Finally, I made some renders of the bedside shelf from different angles. Overall, I think my design turned out well. I made a simple yet functional design that can be used to help with the problem of bunk bed storage.
