Bullet Journaling for College Students

This is about a different type of bullet journaling focused on college students. Many other bullet journaling systems don't seem as focused on college students and their needs. This system of bullet journaling is more focused on typical college students and their week-to-week needs. First of all, bullet journaling is a system of taking notes and journaling to keep a person organized throughout their days and weeks. The goal here is to help college students become more organized with bullet journalling.

Supplies for the Project

The first step in starting your bullet journalling journey to the supplies. You will need a pen/pencils, notebook, a class schedule, sticky notes, markers /highlighters.

There are many different notebooks you can use for bullet journaling but I have found dot grid notebooks to be the easiest to organize. My favorite dot grid notebook is from Minimalism Art. It's a sturdy notebook and when I use pens they don't bleed onto the back of the page. Also, it's extremely sturdy and can take being in a college student's cluttered backpack. Any notebook can be used for bullet journaling it doesn't have to be a dot grid.

The next supply you will need is a pencil and pens. There are a lot of pens and pencils out there that are well suited to bullet journaling. My personal favorite is the Staedtler Triplus Fineliner. These are amazing pens that do not bleed onto other pages in the notebook. They also come in a wide variety of colors and they have a thin pen top. Finding the pens that best suits a person and their notebook takes trial and error but if you are just starting out a plain black pen works great too.

The next supply you will need is your class schedule. This will be used to help organize your class information page in your notebook. This is probably found on your school's website.

Another supply you will need some sticky notes. I use two different-sized sticky notes in my bullet journal; tab size and a normal-sized sticky note. I use these to add notes and reminders throughout the week. For example, if a professor changes a due date that was already written down, I will use a sticky note to change the due date.

Another supply you might need is a ruler. This will help you create crisp lines in your notebook. In my instruction, I use a ruler with a centimeter measurement.

Finally, the last supply you will need is markers and a highlighter. These can be used to bring awareness to important due dates or notes you write in the bullet journal. I like using Zebra Midliner for my highlighters. They do not bleed onto the back of a page and they don't make it hard to read what you have written. Any highlighter can be used in your bullet journal.

Creating the Class Description Page

Now that you have collected all your supplies it is time to set up your Class Description Page. For this, you will need your notebook, pen/pencil, and your class schedule. The Class Description Page is where you write down all the information about the classes you are taking for this semester.

  • To start, create a header from the top of the page that is about 1.5 cm or 3 dots. In this header, you will write classes of either the fall or spring semester with the year. This way it is clear what semester the information you are writing about.
  • After you have your header, skip a line and write down your first class. The best way to organize the Class Description Page is by first writing the class number (ENG 233, MAT 145) and the class title (Growth and the Structure of English). All this information will be in the first line.
  • Next, you will write down the professor's name. In the line directly below that, write the time and what days the course will be (M/W 9:30- 10:50)
  • Next, in the line below that, I would write the location of the class (Glassford Hall, Room 301). If the class is online you can skip this part.
  • Finally, write the section of the class (005). Now you have completed the first class, skip to lines and repeat the process until you have written all the information for these classes. Once you have finished, this would be a good point to maybe add a sticky note to mark that this is the Class Description Page.

Creating the Weekly Homework Page

This will be where you organize the homework you have to do during the week. Normally, the best time to do this would be Monday morning. Typically this is when my professors put out their homework for the upcoming week.

  • To start this, create another heading the same way when we did the Class Description Page. In this header, you will put the date of the week (Week of March 8- March 14).
  • The next step is to decide the order to write down your classes. This is totally based on personal preference on how you want to organize your class but I go by most assignments to least assignments. Once you have your classes configured it's time to get organized for the upcoming week.
  • The first step is to write out all of the assignments for the week. For all my assignments, I write them out in black. This way it won't become overwhelming by using too many colors. I use my colored pens for due dates. This is the second step.
  • Once you have all of your assignments written down, I go back and write the due dates in a different color. Each day has a different color to help me be organized. If I know I have an exam sometime in the week I will write this in a different color. This way it sticks out to you and you won't forget about it later in the week.
  • The final step is once you finally finish an assignment you can cross it off the Weekly Homework Page

Creating the Week Schedule

IMG_4669.jpg

Once you have your Weekly Homework Schedule finished, the next step is the Weekly Schedule. This is where you will decide what days you will do certain assignments.

  • To start, you will create another header just like in the Class Description Page and the Weekly Homework Page. In this header, it will state Weekly Schedule. Don't put the date here because it should be on the other page with the Weekly Homework Page. This page will look the same as the Weekly Homework Page.
  • Step one is to write down the days. Skip the first line or the first dot and start on the second dot/line from the header. Here, write Monday and in a bullet point list write out what assignments you would like to do. Repeat this process the rest of the week and skip a dot/line between each day.
  • Once you have complete an assignment for that day, cross it out.
  • Also, this could be a place where you add personal events such as doctor's appointments or dates. This could be done in a different color to distinguish the difference between homework and personal activity. Underneath Friday this could be where you add future assignments or projects. Similar to Monday- Friday, write out Future Assignment and write assignments that might be due the next week.

Finally, this section is where I would use my large sticky notes. Normally, I add a sticky note with my schedule for the week. This could be assignments or projects that need some more time looking at or anything else.
