  • Maybe you are a church pastor? a sabbath school teacher? someone who has to build a ark as part of a project?..Or you know just build something!!...I might have something for you.
  • If you think you might need to know more, have any doubts or if you think it needs more work, ping me personally!

Supplies

  • Nails or screws (If you plan on removing it later, go with screws)
  • Medium density fiberboard (8 x 4 Feet - atleast 8 sheets)
  • Half round wood beading (3 metres)
  • Thinner (3 litre)
  • Paint brush (Small and medium)
  • Roller brush (Small - I used two because I had only one person helping me. You can buy as much as many as you need)

  • Sky Blue - Half litre
  • Mahagony brown - one litre
  • Golden brown - one litre
  • White - Two litre
  • Black - Quarter litre
  • Glue (Gorilla wood glue, 3M etc...Whatever you think works best)
  • Jigsaw
  • Heavy duty wood cutter
  • Hammer
  • Clamps
  • Drilling machine
  • Drill bits
  • Gloves
  • Mask

Building the Frame

The wall is 12 feet high 12 feet wide. The frame was not really aligned to be in the center.

As you can see, it doesn't look like a ark at all. This is not needed..but it does give a better support for the ark and minimize the need to drill the wall or use more plywood.

Note: You don't have to make this. You can just make one shape that looks like the ark itself (like in the following steps where I add the front and back pieces but it might be flimsy without a frame.

I wanted it to be very strong because this was built for kids and I did not want it to break when they push or play with it.

It's fairly simple to build. Use one of the sheets.

Note: Do not make the 3 windows on the left and right

We made it as we were figuring out how to go about our plan. Since the plywood is very flexible, we can make a support like shown in the plan. We can either have planks shaped to form a semi circle and just bend the plywood over it or we can cut a semi circle in itself and bend the plywood on top of it like shown in the picture.

The windows are very simple to make. You can make round or square windows like this, 1 feet high and 1 feet wide. I have made numerous changes to this plan later on. To give them a nice border I used a half semi circle beading and cut them at an angle to make a square and nailed it to the sides of the window and painted it white.

Bridge or Accomodation

Don't judge me yet!!..We were just trying to sort things out.

The top part of the ark is very easy to build. It's not even the whole thing. It is just one side of it. Make the bridge with right proportions to the ark. Cut out a sheet of length proportionate to the ark and add two small sheets of same height and attach it perpendicular to the lengthy sheet. Make two small supports that protrude from the small sheets that are perpendicular to the big sheet and mount the roof on top of it. Initially the bridge did not look proportionate so I had made changes later on by making it shorter or by making it more lengthier.

I wanna leave the measurements up to you. Although, I will still upload in a different page the measurements I used.

The Waves!!

I loved doing this part of the project!. I was initially planning on using foam to do this but then I changed my mind to having layers of MDF board with some gap between them so it seems like you are looking farther into the sea.

Since the sheet is not 12 feet long, I made two pieces and attached them together.

1. Initially draw waves on the MDF about 4 feet high from bottom of the MDF.. it need not be perfect. Cut it out with a jigsaw. As you can see in the picture I have a support for the waves..They are about 20 cm in width and go till both the ends of the room. You can make whatever shape of support you need. This worked the best for me. After making the frame attach the waves to the back of the frame with nails or screws and mount it on the ground a little away from the boat. I also added support planks behind the waves to make it more sturdy, from the wall to the waves.

2. Draw waves that alternate to the first one and at a height of three and a half feet. Cut them out using a jigsaw and attach it to the front of the support with screws or nails.

3. Draw one more wave and make it shorter than both of the first two waves (around 2 feet). This time there should be no separation between the second wave and this. You can add space if you need to, by making another support. Drill some holes and attach it to the support.

4. I added another wave at the end which I talk about later.

Templates for the Ark

On one of those MDF sheets I drew the front and the back part of the boat. I liked this shape..You can change it to whatever shape you like.

1. Draw the shapes on the MDF like shown in the picture with a pencil and then cut them out using a jigsaw.

2. You can add maybe small supports to the back but it is not really needed.

3. Drill holes and screw it to the ark and to the wall in the front. Do this on both the sides.

4. If you see closely, I've put filler to match it with the dent from the templates since the front and back templates are on top of the ark's frame. I used POP(Plaster Of Paris) and connected the frame and the templates and now the whole ark body looks like its one piece. I believe you can understand what I am trying to say from the pictures I've shown.

Painting the Waves!!

I painted the waves with two different blue colours. If you notice in the full picture with the ark and the waves..I've added a 4th wave. It has been painted dark blue so it looks like you are looking farther into the sea. I just drew a small wave on the MDF and cut it with the jigsaw for both the sides and attached them to the wall from a little bit before the middle of the ark.

Note: Reduce the thickness of the paint using a thinner to what you prefer. I used a roller instead of a paint brush.

1.Paint the last wave with a very dark ocean blue.

2. Paint the 3rd wave from the front wave with the same dark ocean blue color but this time lighten it with white depending on how light you want it to be.

3. Paint the second wave from the front wave with a sky blue color.

4. Paint the front wave with the same sky blue color but lighten it with white depending on how much paint you initially took.

Depending on the wood and the texture of the paint you might have to do two coating. I painted it two times so it looks bright.

I covered the waves with paper but you can also paint the ark first and then paint the waves. I gave two coats of wood primer on the ark.

Draw lines or use thin stickers exactly parallel to the top curve of the boat with about 10 cm gap between each line. This is to have different shades of brown color on the ark with dark colors starting at the bottom and getting lighter towards the top. I thought this might be a cool way to give impression of planks on top of each other.

I drew a small dark brown line on top of the lines that separate each shade of color. I did the same thing for the bridge like you can see in the picture. I painted the top of the roof with a reddish brown color. I started with the darkest mahagony color. I made it lighter with white paint as I moved to the top. While making it lighter I also added the other brown colors i had bought to make it look rich especially when getting to the topmost parts of the ark . That is probably everything you need to do for the panting part.

Important: Please wear a mask while you are painting.

The Ark Is Here!!

And the whole thing is done. This is how it looks!...I should be honest, it took a lot of time to get it here. The windows were designed to keep animals in them. I made a small square plywood of 1 square feet and made a hole with a driller in the front of the boat and screwed it or you can nail it if you want.
