Brewed Cacao Americano

People who know me might know that I like chocolate. So, I made this: brewed cacao.

As a disclaimer, this is not hot chocolate. This is brewed cacao, basically the chocolate version of coffee. It tastes like coffee if coffee tasted like chocolate, something to try out if you want something interesting (or if you are into chocolate).

Ingredients

  • 2.5 tbsp Cacao/Cocoa powder
  • Hot water

Supplies

  • Mug cup
  • Coffee filter
  • Pour over coffee maker

Cacao Into Filter

Put around 2.5 tablespoons of cacao powder (I used very finely ground high-quality criollo cacao) into a coffee filter inside a pour over coffee maker.

Brew

Add hot water, but make sure it's not too hot since you can burn the cacao. You can add much more water than if you were brewing coffee per pour since it absorbs the water very well. Make sure to mix the cacao with a spoon so that the brew can pass though. Don't worry if your filtrate is a bit cloudy... I filtered it twice and I think it is because the cacao particles are too small for the filter to catch. This is actually good because it adds richness to the drink and is more concentrated, similar to an espresso. (Also be patient, but you can gently move the filter as to encourage its filtering)

Enjoy

After brewing, I moved it to a different cup so that you will be able to see the contents. The first photo is the filtrate after two passes. (Frankly, you don't need to filter it twice, it's good enough to filter it once.) Add milk if you want a latte-style drink, but I added hot water to make it an americano style. Now, it's time to enjoy your brewed cacao.
