How to Make Breakfast Pizza

Breakfast pizza is a unique and delicious way to enjoy your favorite breakfast foods. It may seem strange to have eggs on pizza, however, it is really delicious. The trick to using eggs on your breakfast pizza is to get small eggs and let them spread out nicely on the top of the pizza so that the egg cooks fully. I dug out a little trench in my pizza pictured here. In hindsight, this was probably not necessary and caused the egg to pool up in one spot instead of spreading it out. This is fine if you like your eggs a little runny. If you like well-cooked eggs, use smaller eggs and let the egg spread out.

This recipe gives instructions for making it outdoors in a Dutch oven by providing the correct coal numbers. This can also be made in a conventional kitchen oven.

If you are in the market for a good pizza pan, I recommend plane old cast iron skillets. They do a fantastic job cooking pizza evenly and are useful for many dishes.

Ingredients

  • 1 whole grain pizza dough, you can make it yourself or buy prepackage dough from your supermarket deli
  • 4 eggs
  • 4 strips bacon, or 1 c. ground breakfast sausage, cooked
  • 1/4 c. fresh spinach or other vegetables
  • 1 tbsp. fresh basil, chopped
  • 1 c. pizza sauce (more if you prefer)
  • 1 to 2 c. mozzarella cheese (again, more if you prefer)

Roll Out Dough

Roll out the dough on a clean flat surface or press out in a Dutch oven or 12-inch cast iron frying pan.

Add Sauce

Evenly spread pizza sauce over the dough. Then sprinkle about a 1/4 cup of cheese on the sauce. This helps bind the ingredients.

Place the precooked bacon and/or sausage on the pizza. Next place your spinach or preferred vegetables on top of the meat. Cover with remaining cheese.

Crack an egg on the pizza in four different spots.

Bake Pizza

Bake at 425° F for about 20 minutes, or until cheese is melted and crust is slightly brown. If using a Dutch oven, place about 21 coals on top of the lid and 10 on the bottom for 20 minutes, or until cheese is melted and crust is slightly brown.

Serve

Sprinkle with fresh basil, cut and serve. Serves 2 to 4.
