Box of Hearts

For the final project, I wanted to integrate my theme for the class and make a russian doll-esque item that used hearts as the main shape. It has 4 layers, each with a focus on a specific type of manufacturing.

Supplies

Layers inside to out ->

Layer 1 (mold):

  1. PLA

Layer 2 (paper net):

  1. Card stock

Layer 3 (3D printed):

  1. PLA

Layer 4 (press fit):

  1. 1/8" plywood
  2. paper clip (for the hinge)

Ideation

I sketched out and planned all the layers before moving on to the next step. I knew what the inner-most layer would be and planned the outer layers around it.

The next step is to 3D model each layer and subsequent pieces, as well as deciding the size increases between layers.

Fabrication & Assembly

Forgot to take pictures of the assembly of layers 3 and 4. I had to sand down the face of the hinges on the 3D print and hammer the press-fit pieces together, but they all assembled pretty nicely.

Put the layers inside each other to see if they fit together, which they do. Additionally, each layer should be able to be used individually. I think this entire process was very insightful for planning and designing, and I enjoyed creating each layer.
