Bow Tie Creation

How to Tie A Perfect Bow Tie

The bow tie is a descendant of the knotted cravat. It was born from the need for neckwear that was easier to wear than the cravat and that would last throughout a more active day. By the end of the 19th century, the butterfly and batwing bow tie were commonplace. Black bow ties were worn with dinner jackets and white bow ties with evening tails. Today bow ties are mainly worn on formal occasions, however, in the past decade bow ties for everyday wear have seen a rise in popularity. A bow tie is perfect for any man who likes to stand out among his peers.

Step 1: Let It Hang!

Hang the bow tie flat around your neck, pulling side A longer than side B by approximately 1.5 inches.

Step 2: the Bring About!

Bring A across B close to your neck to prevent the tie from becoming too loose.

Step 3: Simple and Loose Knot!

Continue to bring A up behind B, forming a simple and loose knot.

Step 4: Form the Bow Tie Shape!

Fold B to make a bow tie shape by pulling it to the left and then folding it back over itself to the right. The fold should be directly between the collar points.

Step 5: Form the Elephant!

Drape A over the front of B.

Step 6: Fold and Pass!

Fold A and pass it through the loop behind B.

Step 7: the Pull!

Continue pulling A through the loop, without pulling it completely through. This will form the back half of the bow.

Step 8: the Adjustment!

Tighten the knot and adjust until even by pulling on opposite sides simultaneously. Pull the front left and back right section to tighten, and the front right and back left end apart to loosen.
