Bow Tie Baby Bib
Inspired by some instructions I found through pinterest, I made my grandson some really cute bow tie bibs.
After trying Make It, Love It's instructions, I figured out how to make the bibs even faster to sew. My simplified bow tie is much easier to make.
This is a great way to reuse old mens shirts, kitchen towels and fabric scraps.
List of Materials
To make a bib you need:
- Mens dress shirt
- Towel
- Contrasting fabric for the bowtie
- Heat and Bond iron-on adhesive
- Velcro
- Sewing machine & iron
You can make two bibs from one shirt if you cut the placket off the top of the shirt and attach it to a bib piece cut from the fabric of the back of the shirt. You can’t cut two from the front because most dress shirts have a front pocket that gets in the way.
I used an old kitchen towel for the backing, because the terry cloth is a little thinner and easier to sew.
Cutting and Ironing
I drew the patterns freehand, but you can find lots of bib patterns online.
Cut the shape of a bow tie out of Heat and Bond. Cut a slightly larger version out of scrap fabric.
Cut a bib out of the mens shirt and towel.
Iron the bow tie onto the bib piece from the shirt.
Sewing It Together
Sew down the bow tie with a zigzag stitch.
Pin together the front and back of the bib (the shirt and towel pieces), right sides together, and sew a straight stitch around the edges, leaving a small opening on one side.
Finish the edges with a serger or zigzag stitch.
Turn the bib right side out and sew the opening closed.
Sew small pieces of velcro to the ends to keep the bib on the baby.
The bib is now finished!
