Bot-Bot is an easy-to-use bottle opener that works with plastic bottles whose cap is of the screw kind. It was made for people incapacitated from using one of their hands at it allows to open bottles with only one hand. The project consist in a wooden box whose intern surfaces are covered in friction-capable rubber that allow an object to remain still.

Materials and Tools

Materials:

  • Plywood Slab
  • Wood Glue
  • Universal Glue
  • Rubber
  • Gold Aerosol Painting

Tools and Software:

  • Laser Cutter
  • InkScape

Draw the Box’s Models in InkScape

You can create your own. We used Boxes.py to create ours before editing with InkScape, but we can’t guarantee this method to always work.

Measures:

  • Height: 7 cm
  • Width: 11 cm
  • Length: 11 cm

Step 3: Get the Pieces Ready With the Laser Cutter

Cut the box with the Laser Cutter: it’s going to be the main part of the project.

Warning: while using the Laser Cutter always be sure not to move from the machine, for the Laser Cutter is dangerous and could start a fire. Be sure to be trained or supervised when using the machine.

Apply the Rubber on the Internal Surface of All the Faces

Use the universal glue to make them stick together and some weight to prevent air bubbles to form and to get a better result. It takes approximately 5 to 10 minutes for the glue we used to solidify.

At the end of the process you should have something that resemble the box in the last image.

Spray Paint All the External Surfaces of the Box

We used golden aerosol painting to paint all the surfaces of the box but feel free to use the color you like the most. You’ll need to wait from 30 minutes to 1 hour before the paint dries.

Glue the Box

Use the wood glue to glue all the pieces of the box together: put some glue on two sides of the box, then press the two pieces together for a minute so that they get into position and the glue starts to solidify. After you glue all the pieces together you’ll need to wait for the glue to solidify completely: 6 hours should do the trick!

Apply the Rubber on the External Bottom of the Box

As done before with the internal surfaces, you’ll need to use the universal glue. Again, 5 to 10 minutes and something heavy on the surface should do the trick.

This way the box won’t move when you try to open a bottle and it will guarantee the opening to be easier.

Decorate!

How you decorate is up to you. We decided to put our logo on but anything is okay, just be sure to have fun!

That’s It! You’re Done. Congratulations!
