Bookshelf Without Nails

00.jpg

Challenge was to made whole bookshelf without any metallic elements. Just wood and wooden parts.

Supplies

  • boards with thickness 25 millimeters, which looks better than 20 mm. 30 mm would be too thick
  • I opted for spruce because it is light, soft, and easy to work with
  • wooden pegs

Idea is easy, just create it with fantasy and esthetic feeling. To create a precise model, free software like SketchUp can be very helpfulIt is also easy to understand how it works at first sight. This can assist in planning the shelves properly, based on the heights of your books.

Then you can create list of all parts used for bookshelf. I used different colors to better understanding parts with same sizes and remembering which part is where.

Depending on board sources you may create cutting plan when you use wide board, or buy premade boards with suitable dimmensions.

For binding I used just wooden pegs, two in each binding. Weight of shelves and books is good enough, I omitted any glue so I can disassemble parts when I need to make changes in vertical separations.

With bookshelf I connected also side shelves with horizontal connecting pegs for better stability and also to fill unused space near wall at low ceiling, for magazines maybe..

If shelf is assembled an you are satisfied with it, and you decide to paint it, disassemble shelf again to parts, to paint also places under connected boards.

When dye is dry, you can "accomodate" your favorit books :)
