Bonus 3
Hello people! Here is the bonus 3 for 3k views! In today's bonus, its "How to open a locomotive to the gearbox"! If you have a locomotive and want to get down into the gearbox of it and clean it up, this guides you on how to do it. This 'ible has the example of a GP38 (my CSX 6825). This also goes to F9 units (like my UP 1234) and GP40 units (like my Chessie System 4810).
Also, throughout here, you will see my headlight spot on the locomotive (which it will be used as light to see the pictures).
Open the Shell
Now, BEFORE you get to the gearbox, open the shell of the loconotive. There should be some kind of tab that you can just pry open on both sides of the locomotive. Once you manage to get both tabs off, pull the chassie (aka the motor holding) down. The shell should now be seperated from the chassie. If there are wires still attatched to the inside if the shell, don't worry about it. Leave those alone.
Take the Trucks Out
The trucks with the gearbox needs to be taken out! First of all, there should be a small rectangular piece held by a screw on the gearbox (see pic 2). Unscrew that. Then, push down on the slanted slope on the opposite side of the rectangular piece (see pic 4) with a flathead screwdriver.
Take Off the Wheel Cover
To get into the gear system, CAREFULLY take off the wheel covering. The opposite side of the coupler is where you should pry it off. Pry it off using the flathead screwdriver. Or push down on the coupler part carefully to take it off.
Congratulations!
Yay! You got to the gear system of your locomotive! Great job! Now you can clean all those gears, then reassemble it back together!
Reassembling
If you know how to reassemble this back together, skip this step. If you need help reassembling, look at the pictures above.
Fin!
