Bobbin Winder

Yeah, yeah, yeah... This is not an original Idea but I had a need for a bobbin winder and everything I could find was lacking information. I used all the ideas that I found from other bobbin winders other creative people have made and here we are. Follow along and I will show you how I made this machine and what Parts I used.

Start by laying out the location of the switches in the project box. The On-Off-On switch is momentary one direction and ON the other. This way you can operate at your own speed or turn in on and let 'er rip. In this configuration with the direct drive belt, the winder will not auto stop. You will have to monitor it and stop at the appropriate time. Once everything is laid out, drill the holes for the two switches, four holes for mounting the box to the base and one hole to run the wires from the sewing machine motor and power cord.

Next take all of your components and lay them out to find the best location for each piece leaving room for the thread stand. Take the bracket that comes with the sewing machine motor and bend it near the mounting slot. Use washers and screws to securely fasten the motor bracket to the base. Continue and mount the control box and bobbin winder. Make sure to mount the bobbin winder and motor bracket screws in the middle of the slots to allow adjustment of the belt later.

In this step you will wire the electronics. Continue with Caution, I assume no liability in your wiring skills.

The power wire will connect to the center lug on the switch and the two outer lugs will be wired together with the rheostat. When you operate the switch power will travel to the rheostat which will control the speed and then to your motor.

1. Remove three pin connector from motor
2. Connect one motor wire to one wire from the rheostat
3. Make a jumper wire to bridge the two outer lugs on the On-Off switch
4. Connect the bridged wire from the switch to the other wire on the rheostat
5. Connect one wire from the power cord to the center lug on the On-Off switch
6. Connect the other power cord wire to the motor

Now that everything is laid out and all of the wiring is sorted, start assembly. Loosely install parts in their previously laid out locations. Install the belt between the sewing machine motor and bobbin winder. Then adjust belt tension and tighten all mounting hardware. Finally connect all electrical connections and install control box top and switches.

Congratulations, you have now completed your new bobbin winder. You can now wind to your hearts content.
