Blood Drive

In the world today, there are many shipping containers that are taking us space and not having a fulfilling purpose. In this project, I will be re-purposing a shipping container into something that will have a positive affect on local communities. The creation of a blood drive for the shipping container will allow people to donate blood to help local communities and hospitals give patients blood for many medical services.

Statistics say that nearly every two seconds, someone in the United States is in need of blood for medical services, which one small donation can change one life at a time. Additionally, donating blood can give personal benefits such as reducing cancer, blood analysis, and decreasing the large amount of iron our bodies typically have.

Through the use of TinkerCAD, an online program for creating 3D models, I have constructed a model of the Blood Drive using a shipping container.

Supplies

Materials:

1 Shipping Container

1 PVC Pipe (Height of Sink)

1 Accessible Ramp (Wood Panels/Boards, Screws)

1 Window AC Unit

1 Handwashing Sink

1 Water Tank

Insulation

1 Solar Powered Heater

2 Armrest Chairs

Paint (Logo and Design)

1 Garbage Bin

1 Refrigerator

1 Storage Cabinet

3 Glass Window Panels

1 Lock (Door)

Tools:

Angle Grinder / Plasma Cutter

Hammer / Drill

Welding Tool / Welding Helmet

Paint Brush / Paint Roller

Galvanized Screws

Saw / Sawzall / Table Saw

The use of a accessibility ramp is added to the container as it allows for people who may be disabled to easily walk or wheel in the container to donate blood without any problems. Additionally, the use of four windows located on the roof of the container will bring natural light to the container to save energy that can be used for storing the blood at the correct temperature or keeping the blood drive at a steady safe temperature for all medical services to be clean.

Systems

The use of the Air Conditioning Window Unit will allow for the blood drive to be kept at correct temperatures during times of summer when temperatures rise and people need to be cooled and relaxed for the donation. Additionally, the cooling system will allow for blood to be maintained at a cool temperature to essentially preserve all the proteins and important cells that will be later utilized for medical services.

The use of a solar powered heating system will allow for the container to stay at correct temperatures during times of winter or any cold day. The solar panels will save energy for the container as it will use the sun's rays to transfer heat into the container to keep blood and donators safe.

The use of a small hand sink is very important to keep workers and donators safe from the spread of bacteria, especially when there are open insertions and blood flow. The piping and water will come from the pipes located directly under the sink running vertical to a water tank then to the located water tank on the side of the shipping container. This will provide fresh water to the sink. Any excess water will drain into a separate tank to keep all possible containments safe and kept out of environment harm.

Walls, Insulation

In between the walls, the use of fiberglass insulation will allow for less heat transfer to occur between the outside environment and the interior of the shipping container. Both the steel walls and insulation will result in less thermodynamics which will result in blood and donators kept at the correct and safe temperatures. Since the blood drive will be located very near the ground and there is windows on the ceiling, insulating the floor and ceiling will be necessary in keeping the temperature at steady levels at all times.

Decor

The appearance of the blood drive has to attract many to feel comfortable and be able to share their great experience to inform family and friends. The phrase "Be the reason someone's heart beats strong" is on one side of the shipping container for many to see a good reason and make that choice of helping someone else in need. The phrase will attract more people as they will think about someone dear to them and how this act of kindness can go a long way. Additionally, the heartbeat with the heart location in the middle will represent the logo of the blood drive to make the container much more aesthetically pleasing. Additionally, the interior of the blood drive has features of arm chairs for those to rest when donating blood and drawers for those working to access supplies easily. The addition of a garbage can to throw away any access supplies will allow workers and donators to feel comfortable and safe knowing that the blood drive is a sterile and clean environment. Lastly, the refrigerator gives a great look on the blood drive as it represents the location of the blood storage to which the donators will know their blood is kept safe for transportation to those in need.

This will be the final construction of the blood drive through the use of a shipping container which will result in saving lives, saving the environment, and helping the world as a whole!
