Blendtec Jar/Blade Repair
Blendtec blenders are really good at blending. Unfortunately, the jars that come with them fail after some time and the entire thing needs to be tossed into the trash and replaced. In an effort to reduce unnecessary consumption I have repaired my blender jar blade assembly.
This guide can be used if your jar is leaking, your blade is loose or your bearing is damaged.
Notes: If your jar is still under warranty, you can return it to Blendtec for a replacement. This repair might be dangerous. Please proceed at your own risk.
Supplies
Tools Required
Soldering Iron
Needlenose Pliers
Vice Grips (1 large, 1 small)
Parts Required
Skateboard Bearing (608-2RS)
Silicone Sealant
SuperLube or other food save grease
Removing the Bolt
1) Using a small pair of vice grips, Grip the smooth nut inside the Jar. I had my vice grips very tight and it didn't scratch the nut.
2) Wrap the gear end with a piece of paper or cloth and grip it with the larger vice grips.
3) The assembly is reverse-threaded, to loosen the bolt turn the wrenches clockwise as you would if you were trying to tighten the bolt.
Removing the Seal
This is the worst part of the whole process. To remove the seal, I melted the inner plastic using a soldering iron set to 230c and pulled at the remaining plastic with a pair of needle-nose pliers. If you don't have a temperature adjustable soldering iron, unplug the iron to let it cool if the plastic is smoking. It is probably a good idea to do this step outdoors while wearing a mask and eye protection.
Replacing the Bearing
1) Remove the old bearing (it should just fall out)
2) Clean the jar with soap and water to remove any residual dirt and grease
3) Dry the Jar
4) Fill the cavity in the jar with grease and then install a new bearing
Note:
Ensure that you are using a sealed bearing. The bearing should say 2RS on it meaning that it is shielded on 2 sides. You can find a bearing online search for 608-2RS or you can support local and purchase a bearing from a skateboard shop.
Reinstalling and Sealing
1) After installing the bearing, re-install the bottom metal cover and assembly.
2) Seal the cover using silicone sealant or epoxy
3) Let the glue dry overnight
Cleaning and Testing
1) Fill the blender with soapy water
2) Start the blender and look for any leaks
3) Ensure that any residual grease has been cleaned
Final Notes
I have no idea how long this repair will last. Not leaving liquids in the jar and immediately drying the jar after use should extend the life of the repair as well as any jars that are still working.
