Blackout Car Emblems / Logo Cheaply and Easily.

2 Ways to Blackout Car Emblems / Logo Cheaply and Easily

Cheaply and easily Blackout your own car emblem/ logo using these two simple methods. I used #Plastidip for the 3D logos and vinyl decals for the Ford logos. These examples are preformed on the 2021 Ford Explorer with the sports appearance package. The Plastidip works amazing and peals off leaving no residue behind. It is the easiest, safest and best way to #blackout any logo. If you are looking for deleting chrome, look no further. The Vinyl decal overlays are also a cheap and effective way to blackout logos that cannot be plastidipped. Let me know how it goes when you try this #easy car hack yourself!

Use alcohol/ sanitizing wipes to thoroughly clean off the emblem. Make sure it is completely dry before applying plastic dip.

Tape Off Emblem

Tape off the emblem and be sure to leave around 1/4" to 1/2" of space around all lettering or logos. If it is a windy day you may need to tape off even more.

TEST THE SPRAYCAN!

This is the most important step that many people skip. Get a piece of scrap paper/cardboard and test the spray. It is critical to know how it will spray before applying to the emblem. The plasti dip can I used had a extremely vertical spray. I now know going into it, that I have to account for the vertical spray pattern.

First Coat

The first coat should be VERY LIGHT. You want to lightly spray on the first layer. There should still be chrome spots showing through it is so light.

Second Coat

Drying times will be different based on temperature. For reference, it was 80 degrees out when I applied this and it took around 10 minutes to dry. Make sure the first layer is dry before applying the second layer. On the second coat, lay on a heavier spray than the first. Make sure to angle the spray can all different angles to hit all the emblem angles.

Third and Final Coat

Allow the second coat to fully dry. Add the third and final coat and apply this one the heaviest out of all three coats. Make sure not to make it so heavy that there are drips. The logo should be completely covered with no chrome showing and a smooth looking surface.

Glossifier Coat

TEST THE SPRAY! Unlike the previous can, this spray can delivered a rounded spray pattern. Take this into account when applying. Repeat the previous steps, I did only two coats of the glossifier.

Remove Plasti Dip

Gently remove the plasti dip. This is the amazing part of this product. It will perfectly tear away around all of the emblems. go slowly, pulling it off the lettering. You may have to use a toothpick or tweezers to get into the tighter areas.

2nd Method! Vinyl Decals

For the front and back Ford emblems, Plasti dip will not work because the lettering is not 3D. In this case I will use a vinyl decal to stick onto of the emblem. I cut out my own vinyl decal but you can order one (see product links).

This is as simple as lining up the decal and applying to the emblem. Make sure to get out all of the air bubbles. A heat gun helps in this process.
