Blacked Out Chrome on 2004 GMC

IMG_1678.jpg

In this Instructable, I will be showing how to black out the chrome on your 2005 GMC sierra. This can work on any vehicle, but I am showing it on my truck. This can also work with any colour of paint, but I chose to do this on chrome. This project requires taking the bumper off, so for that here is a link to a video that I found. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sygXyarHWfA. Thanks to 209 Garage

Supplies

  •  Ratchet set
  •  Flat head screwdriver
  •  Wd-40 for the rusted bolts
  •  Masking Tape
  •  Mat Black primer 2-3 cans (no gloss)
  • Mast Black spray paint 2-3 cans (no gloss)
  • 120-grit sandpaper block
  • 220-grit sandpaper block
  • Water and microfiber cloth

Taking Bumper Off

After you have watched the tutorial on how to take the bumper off. It should look like this. For some tips take pictures of where the bolts go because there are two sizes short and long.

Sanding

In this step, you want to have your 120-grit and 220-grit sandpaper with you. You want to start with the 120. Sand the chrome until it doesn’t show the reflection. Once that is completely done, use the 220 grit sandpaper to make it fine. With the microfiber cloth clean all the sandpaper dust.

Taping

This step is the easiest, just tape everything that's not chrome and make sure you cover it properly or the paint will go through the tape.

Primer

Now that everything is sanded and cleaned it’s time for priming. The first 2 primer coats are light coats. Let these coats dry for at least 20-30 minutes. The last coat is the heavy coat, which is the coat in which you cover the whole thing in light strokes to not make the primer drip. Let this coat sit for a least 24 hours. If you want you can do one more coat.

Spray Painting

This step is the painting step. Now that you have the primer coats all done and dry, you are now able to paint. With the spray paint, you want to do the same as the primer. 2 light coats and 1 heavy coat. Then let it dry for 12-24 hours.

Finished Product and Put Bumper Back On

Now that everything is dry, you are able to put the grill and bumper on. To put it back on watch that youtube video that I shared with you. Tip put the bumper on first then the grill. Now you are ready to do more on the truck or just ride around.
