Birds Feeder Platform and Water Feeder

It is basically a bird feeder or to simply say a platform for us to place seeds, food ingredients and remaining from any time meal to offer for birds at slightly raised place from normal human height. It is made by keeping in mind with intention to offer food for birds (especially for crows) before we start or when we end our any time meal.

spot chosen to make it was a common pathway so i fixed it on around 7 feet high, so even while people passing from there, birds (especially like crows) will not get scared and fly away. other small shy birds like sparrow, common mynas & squirrels come to it when no people were walking around this.

Bottle Based Water Feeder Fixing

here first thing to clear is water feeder is bought from regular plant nursery store and fixed to bottle.
Ingredients with options/alternates:

  1. rope / metal wire / coconut fibre rope.
  2. regular water bottle - little thick than a regular one time use and crush bottles.
  3. water feeder fixable on water bottle
  4. S-shaped hook or hook made with metal wire - optional
  • buy water feeder fixable on bottle from your nearby store or order online and fix it on bottle threads.
  • get some metal wire ,rope and make holdings for bottle to hang it upside down. keep it loose to be able to hang it in other object.
  • use S-shaped hook in case place where you intend to hang bottle have no separate pointed object like metal nail instead choose place where it is having rod or hook-able structure overhead.
  • while using S-shape i found separate made wire hook is more convenient so given you its photos here.
  • give extra support for bottle stability if its swinging. keep it removable for ease in water refilling. I used shoe-lace here. (marked with yellow oval )

For refilling bottle next time you just have to get bottle out from hook & this is going to be on slightly high level so design your hook or use S-shaped hook accordingly.

Platform Making

Material :

  1. thick metal sheet / any container lid with curved sides / metal dining plate
  2. iron T/L strip / wooden stick / L-shaped wall shelf bracket/s
  3. nuts & bolts
  4. metal(iron) welding machine in case of metallic ingredients approach.
  • to keep it easy you can go with any plastic container lid by taking its inside up so its edges raised upward will help your ingredients not to fall from all sides

Metal plate will need crafting and more efforts to make hole in middle.

with metal sheet more efforts are required to bend it over edges.

choosing any approach is up-to you as per your expertise level and available material and tools. I choose metal sheet as it was available at my place and having tools to bend it. for making hole in middle i used welding machine.

give a cut to plastic container or hole at one side or simply leave one edge open in case of metal sheet for water to get slide on that side. It will help in keeping platform dry from spilled water & reducing smudge, algae, fungus on platform surface.

  • choose your spot to fix it, choose your hanging / holding pipe / L-shaped wall shelf as per your platform size

As I chose my spot to fix it was 7 feet high and spot having metal pipe(as base) near it so i selected iron L-shaped rod around a feet in length and used welding machine to attach that rod to base pipe.

If you are using L-shaped wall shelf bracket then you have to drill 2 holes on base or use nails directly if base is wooden wall or tie it with rope to your base (pole in case here, if you don't have welding tools, unable to fix with nut-bolts).

maintain its level with help of bubble level or mobile phone app to give it slope on your desired side as birds make mess sometimes and liquid or water spilled on it by them falls easily towards slope.

  • Now up to this point my platform base (metallic sheet bent on edges keeping one side open towards water slope) and holding / hanging pipe is ready so fix your platform base on it. I did mine with nut and bolt.

Learnings & Tips

  • maintain distance between water feeder & plate of about 2 inches as with food smudge it gets often dirty and you have to clean it frequently.
  • since i am knowing from my ancestors that birds prefer drinking water offered by human from a place where, only morning sun rays touches it and rest whole day it is in shade; so choose your making spot accordingly.
  • choosing shaded spot for platform will keep water cool and attract more birds to rest.
  • always keep water filled, don't wait for bottle to get empty otherwise birds will return getting nervous.
  • don't know about seeds feeding as per natures rule but for food ingredients don't make it monotonous + regularity in offering same food. let birds search elsewhere also, this keeps ecosystem, environment food cycle undisturbed.
  • choose 1 liter or more bigger bottle to keep abundant water , sometimes birds spills water from it.
  • some crows dip / soak content in water so keep eye on water quality, this habit of them makes water dirty and develop algae in water. change the dirty water immediately because except crow other birds may not drink from it if water is dirty.
  • clean platform with regular interval.
