  • Newspapers
  • Flour
  • Salt
  • Water
  • Bowl
  • Large Container/Bucket
  • Food Colouring (optional)
  • Biodegradable Adhesive

Gathering Materials

  • Collect old newspapers.
  • You'll need a container large enough to hold the paper and water for soaking.
  • Sufficient water to soak the paper and create the pulp.
  • Flour and salt (to strengthen the paper), food colouring (for coloured paper) and biodegradable adhesive.

Preparing the Paper

  • Tear the paper into small pieces. The smaller the pieces, the easier it will be to break them down into pulp.

Soak the Paper

  • Place the torn paper pieces into a large container or bucket.
  • Cover the paper pieces with water. Make sure the paper is fully submerged.
  • Let the paper soak for a few days (3-4 days recommended). This will soften the paper and make them easier to blend.

Blend the Paper

  • Once the paper has soaked sufficiently, transfer it into a separate container and begin shredding it with your hands (blender can be used).
  • Add enough water to cover the paper and create a slushy consistency.
  • Mix/blend the paper and water mixture until it becomes a smooth pulp. Depending on the size and power of your blender, you may need to blend in batches.

Add Additives

  • Add your flour, salt, colouring of your choice, biodegradable adhesive, and mix well.

Pressing And/or Drying the Pulp:

  • Create a mold out of polyurethane and gather your cover your bowl, apply Vaseline or glycerine around the mold and the bowl (for smooth disassembling), and begin pressing your pulp onto the molds.
  • Use your fingers or a teaspoon to create the curves on the pulps.

Final Drying

  • Once the pulp has been pressed or dried, allow it to air dry completely (direct sunlight). This may take a few days depending on the thickness of the pulp.

Assembly

  • After drying, assemble the two molds together using your biodegradable adhesive.
