Bicycle Hoops Clothes Hanger-Upcycling
In this upcycling activity, we will transform old bicycle wheels into light, creative and durable hangers.
Imagine using that expensive carbon fiber or aluminum wheel that broke or dented the rim on a super light and original hanger that no one owns! With a 26 rim wheel you can make 4 hangers and still have spoke material for other cool things like the keyring we showed you in an Instructables. In this tutorial I show how I made an aluminum hanger with stainless steel hooks taken from the spokes and niples of the wheels that are very strong and super light.
Supplies
List of materials:
Damaged bike wheel, if you don't have one, get it for free from a bike shop where they throw a lot away.
2- A small plastic or rubber tube or a bicycle tube valve cap.
Tool list
Bicycle spoke wrench
PVC connection for 25mm water pipes
Cutter pliers
Linesman’s pliers (common pliers)
Disassemble and Clean the Wheel Parts
1- Loosen the spoke nipples using an appropriate tool or pliers
2- Clean all parts using soap and steel wool
Marking, Cutting and Drilling the Rim
1-Divide the rim into 4 equal parts
2-Use a permanent pen to mark cut points
3-After cutting the 4 pieces, file and smooth the corners.
4- Mark the center of the arc and make a hole with the same measurement that already exists in the rim to fit the nipples
Turning the Bike Spoke Into a Hanger Hook
1- Mark 15cm from the threaded end of the bicycle spoke.
2-Use the part of the bicycle spoke that has the hook to use as a hot iron to drill a hole in a 25mm PVC pipe conector.
3-At the other end of the threaded part of the cut bicycle spoke, make a 10mm bend.
4- Fit the bent part into the hole made in the PVC connector and hold it tight aligning with the pipe arc by bending it around the pipe
5-After retrieving the curved bicycle spoke from the PVC connector, make an inverted bend using the pliers in the sector corresponding to 3/4 of the arc made.
6-The bend made with the pliers must be oriented so as to correspond with the center of the upper curve of the hook
7-Finish the hook by closing the top fold of the hook using pliers, this creates the final wiring
Final Assembly of Hanger Parts
1-Cut a piece of plastic or rubber tubing, or use a bicycle tube cap, to use as a spacer in the assembly.
2-First fit the nipple into the underside of the bicycle rim where a centered hole has been drilled.
3-Dress the nipple that is already fitted with the piece of tube cut so that it is slightly larger than the exposed part of the nipple.
4-Screw another nipple into the straight part of the hook leaving an exposed part of the thread to engage the nipple already positioned on the bicycle rim.
5-Ensure that the tube used as a spacer is well compressed between the nipples in order to ensure firmness to the set.
