Bicycle Helmet Light Mount
I want more than one lighting option when I cycle or trail ride at night.
I have a light on my handlebars to track with my bike and it works great, however, I want to see more than what is directly in front of me. I want to illuminate the trail where I'm looking, straight ahead or side to side.. A light mounted to my helmet solves that problem for me.
In case you are wondering....having just a helmet light is inadequate too. You really need two lights, in my opinion. One on the helmet and one on the handlebars.
I needed a way to securely fastened a small flashlight to my mountain bike helmet, so....I made a device that would do that. You can purchase branded mounts, of course, but don't. I gotcha covered with this inexpensive hack.
Materials
- a helmet
- wine cork
- Velcro straps
- a flashlight
Construction
Fasten the flashlight to the cork with the Velcro straps.
That's it!
Putting It All Together
Most helmets are designed with large ventilation holes. Pick one, either on the side or on top, and wedge the cork into it. You're done!
I've included a picture of the flashlight mounted on the side and a pic from underneath. Helmet vent holes vary by make and model, but you should be able to find a way to make this work with most bicycle helmets.
Having Trouble?
-Is your cork not wide enough?
Wrap it in duct tape until it's wide enough to wedge into the vent hole.
-Is your cork too wide?
Sand it or cut out slivers until it fits.
-Is your cork too long?
Trim it to size.
-Is your cork too short?
Find a screw and screw two corks together, end to end down the center. Then, trim to size.
