Best Food-Hack EVAAR!

This is a way to improve one of the best sweet treats available today.

Before we go any further, it is just a hot press of the Krispy Kreme doughnut, but this is a step by step, and I just improved upon my tried, and tested method.

Also, I thought that this was already a thing that lots of people did, but it surprises me every time that I hear of someone having never tried it.

Start to finish this takes about 5 minutes depending on whether you have the doughnuts, and the size of your grill.

Starting With the Original Glazed (Tha' O-G!)

I've tried other types of Doughnut. I've tried doughnuts from other places. Stick with the classic, Krispy Kreme original glazed. The only thing they don't hold up to is coffee dunking... They're too light, and airy for that usually (but this instructable solves that issue).

This is also a great way to use up day-old doughnuts. Once they've been pressed, you'd never know they've been sat for a day.

Bust Out the Foreman.

The George Foreman Lean, Mean, Fat-Reducing Grilling Machine is the tool of choice for me, but I suppose any non-stick panini press will do the trick. I like the GFLMFRGM because it has a gentle slope, which Panini presses often don't. This could be a deal breaker if the reason I like the slope (discussed later) is important to you. I also prefer this smaller model. The small ones heat quickly, and more evenly than the bigger ones (I have one of the larger ones with interchangable plates, but this is my go-to for this implementation).

Don't believe the hype about the Waffle-Iron. Clean up on one of those is a nightmare, or you're going to have to add oil to this snack, which isn't ideal.

Prep Your Grill.

Make sure the grill is clean, and place a paper towel down in front of the grill where the drip tray would go.

OK, so these things come with a drip tray, but don't use it. Even if you're the person who didn't immediately lose that piece of plastic, use a paper towel. The mess made isn't a greasy one, so it won't soak through the towel, and this makes for much easier clean up.

I bi-fold mine to keep it out of the way. The mess isn't sprawling, and you don't want to keep moving it with your sleeves, so just tuck it neatly under where the drips will gather.

All the Difference.

I've been hot-pressing my Krispy Kremes for years. This, however, is a game-changer.

Whether you choose to use ground, or dried, adding cinnamon is what prompted me to share this hack.

I won't tell you which I prefer, but I keep both on-hand, and not everyone keeps a micro-plane in their kitchen.

Add Cinnamon to taste, but don't be afraid of being generous. This one is very lightly dusted, but it was only half done when I stopped to take the picture.

Press the Doughnut

This grill can accommodate 2 doughnuts at a time, but I did them one at a time for aesthetics in the pictures.

Oh, and you'll need tongs to get it off the grill, or a fork I suppose.

Fat-reducing Indeed

See how much grease, and sugar falls off the doughnut. This is one of the reasons I like this method, and why I feel that the slope on the grill is important.

OK, it's not much grease, but the sugar won't be missed. when you caramelize the sugar, the flavor changes slightly, and it would be too sweet (IMO) with all the sugar.

If you didn't heed my advice about the drip tray, you'll have to clean the sugar off it. Paper towels make for easy clean up. You can actually just let it cool slightly, fold the paper towel in half again, and wipe the sugar off the grill for next time.

Enjoy

Not only the way your kitchen (or if we're honest, mainly dormroom) smells, but these doughnuts are even more delicious than they started.

If you have parchment, you may want to put a piece onto your plate first, because until they cool, they're sticky.

Once they're cool enough to eat, you can use fingers to pick them up. Until they're cool enough to pick up, don't get the hot sugar near your face.
