I built this belt sander using a 5-inch angle grinder(a 4-inch grinder can also be used by changing the mounting holes). The frame for the sander is made using 6mm MS sheets. The design is simple and I have attached all the required drawing files below. For the belt, I have used a standard 100x610 (4''x24'') sanding belt.

Overall dimension - 250x115x200 mm

Approx weight - 4kg (Whole setup)

Supplies

  1. MS Laser cut parts(6mm) - Drawings attached.
  2. 6201 ball bearings - 18 Nos
  3. 100*600mm sanding belt
  4. M12*80 Bolt - 3 Nos
  5. M12 lock nut -3 Nos
  6. Tension springs - 1
  7. M6 nut and bolts - 8 Nos each

I started the design by taking note (dimension and mounting details) of bought-out parts mainly the angle grinder and belt sander. With a rough idea, I started with the CAD. For the frame, I chose a 6mm standard plate and got the fabrication made by a local vendor. The 6mm plates were laser cut and later welded. The parts were blackened for both finishing and protection.

Assembly

I did the assembly in steps

  1. Assemble the angle grinder using 3 CSK M4x0.7 x 10 Bolts
  2. Put the ball bearing to the bolt (8 nos) as shown in the picture at all 3 locations.
  3. Mount the aluminum roller to the angle grinder threading
  4. Attach the spring to the points shown in the picture
  5. I have used an M10 bolt to adjust the belt alignment
  6. Finally, attach the belt to the sander
