Bedside Lamp (Tube) - LED 12V 2.5W - 3D Printed
Lamps for buy there are like sand by the sea. But a DIY lamp, with individual coloring, is always something special. I will not hide it, building this 3D printed lamp requires a bit of craftsmanship, a.o. soldering.
This lamp can be printed as switch or dimmer version.
If you like the lamp head a bit more square, then you can find another model here: https://www.instructables.com/Bedside-Lamp-Box-LED-12V-25W-3D-Printed/
So you have to decide first, what kind of version you want. Whereby I have to say that my dimmable version does not dim smoothly. But at least two brightness levels are available. If you don't like it, you can always change to the switch version later!
Photos or a video are giving you suggestions for colours of your lamp.
After you have printed your parts ...
Remark: As all parts are designed to fit very precisely, it may happen that you have to rework one or the other part a bit with sandpaper and/or cutter due to different dimensional accuracy of the printers and the different behavior of the filaments.
Supplies
For this project you will need:
- 1x … Ø 65 mm white polycarbonate glass 3mm thick, 70% translucency

- 1x … Ø 4x45mm from a threaded rod (or screw Ø m4 x 50 and saw of the screw head)
- 2x … Ø M3x20mm + plus 2 matching washers (to connect head, neck and light base)
- 4x … wing nuts Ø 4mm
- 10x … washers Ø 15x4,5mm
- 5x … self-tapping screws Ø 2,2x 9,5mm
- 4x … self-adhesive rubber pads Ø 8x1,6mm
- Switch wire, 20cm
- Drill, Ø 2mm
- Fretsaw
- Soldering Iron
- Solder
- (Super)glue
- Sandpaper
- Phillips screwdriver
Especially for the light installation you need:
- AC/DC Socket 5,5/2,1 mm
- 4G bulb socket
- 2 Position Mini Toggle Switch (if you do not want the dimming function)
- 4G bulb 2,5W/250Lm (IMPORTANT!: I do not advise the installation of a higher wattage bulb, because of too much heat development!)
- Dimmer DC 1,8V - 12V 2A
- 12 V AC/DC power adapter

Preparing the Lamp Head - Polycarbonate Glass
Saw from a polycarbonate glass plate, 3mm thick (70% translucency) a "round" disc with a diameter of 55mm. I did it with a fretsaw. You can finish the edges with sandpaper.
Put three very small drops of (super)glue at the front end of the tube - inside the edge. Now insert the polycarbonate disk into the tube and press it against the edge - from the inside of the tube - for a few seconds.
Preparing the Lamp Head - Assemble the Light Unit
Now you need the printed part "BSL_LED Lamp_lightsocket.stl" and a 4G bulb socket.
To attach the bulb socket to "BSL_LED Lamp_lightsocket.stl", you need a Ø 2mm drill bit. Feed the two wires of the bulb socket through the hole in "BSL_LED Lamp_lightsocket.stl". Hold both parts firmly together and drill through the two holes in the bulb socket into the printed part.
Now fix the bulb socket with 2 self-tapping screws Ø 2,2x 2,9 mm to the "BSL_LED Lamp_lightsocket.stl".
Preparing the Lamp Head - Assemble the Light Unit - Wiring Dimm Version
Now take the just assembled part, the dimmer unit and the AC/DC Socket (5,5/2,1mm). You need two more wires about 10 cm long. There are already wires on the bulb socket. If they are long enough for the wiring, I can't say, because the length varies from manufacturer to manufacturer. Fix the cable ends from the bulb socket and the two additional wires to the slots of the dimmer and solder the end of the two free wires to the AC/DC socket - as shown in the pictures and in 3D. Then put axle bolt of the dimmer unit through the hole in the "BSL_Tube_dimmswitch.stl" and screw it tight.

Preparing the Lamp Head - Assemble the Light Unit - Wiring Switch Version
Now take the just assembled part, the 2 Position Mini Toggle Switch and the AC/DC Socket (5,5/2,1mm).
You need one switch wire about 10 cm long. Solder the wires from the bulb socket and the switch wire to the AC/DC socket and to the switch as shown in the picture and in 3D. Then put the switch through the hole in the "BSL_Tube_back_switch.stl" and screw it tight.

Preparing the Lamp Head - Assembling the Lamp Head
To connect head, neck and light base you need 2x … Ø M3x20mm + plus 2 matching washers. Take the "BSL_Tube_head.stl", the "BSL_Tube_neck.stl" and the assembled light unit - switch or dimm version. Lead it into the tube and position it over the holes. Take the screws and put them through the neck from below and fix them with the nuts. I also used washers. It's a little fiddly but you get it done! Now you can also insert and fix the AC/DC socket.
Preparing the Lamp Head - Assembling the Lamp Head - Mounting the Back
For attaching the back plate you need 3 self-tapping screws Ø 2,2x 2,9mm.
Assembly - Mounting Head, Leg and Foot
For the mounting of the legs to „BSL_Tube_neck.stl“ you need
- 2x "BSL_Tube_leg.stl"
- Ø 4x45mm threaded rod (or a screw Ø m4 x 50 and saw of the screw head)
- 4 washers Ø 15x4,5mm (At all points where parts touch, a washer should be used. This ensures a smooth movement of the joints and the turning of the wing nuts).
- 2 wing nuts
For the assembly of the foot joint you need
- 2x "BSL_Tube_foot.stl "
- "BSL_Tube_spacerwasher.stl"
- Ø 4x55mm threaded rod (or a screw Ø m4 x 60 and saw of the screw head)
- 6 washers Ø 15x4,5mm (At all points where parts touch, a washer should be used. This ensures a smooth movement of the joints and the turning of the wing nuts).
- 2 wing nuts
Final - Align Feet and ... Light On!
Finally, note that you can align the feet forward or backward, depending on how you prefer them.
When you have decided that, I recommend - to improve the slip resistance - to attach small self-adhesive rubber pads to the bottom of the lamp feet (4x rubber pads Ø 8x1,6mm).
To light the lamp you will need a 12 V AC/DC power adapter.
Have fun assembling - I hope without problems! ... and an ambient light!
