Bedside Lamp (Box), LED 12V - 3D Printed

I have already published a bedside lamp here: https://www.instructables.com/Bedside-Lamp-LED-12V-25W-3D-Printed/ ... lamp head in tube form.

But for those who like it more square, this one now has a box shape and was originally the first bedside lamp I have designed and printed. The design is based on "PLAzzy Dog Lamp - LED 12V 2.5W - 3D Printed" ... that cannot be denied!

The assembly is in many parts identical with "Bedside Lamp (Tube)".

The files must be printed in the following number of copies:

  • 1x BSL_LED Lamp_head.stl
  • 1x BSL_LED Lamp_back.stl
  • 1x BSL_LED Lamp_neck.stl
  • 2x BSL_LED Lamp_leg.stl
  • 2x BSL_LED Lamp_foot.stl
  • 1x BSL_LED Lamp_spacerwasher.stl
  • 1x BSL_LED Lamp_lightsocket.stl

Print settings:

  • Printer brand: Prusa Printer: I3 MK3S
  • Supports: No
  • Resolution: 0,18
  • Infill: 20%
  • Filament brand: Prusa; ICE Filament color: Galaxy Black, Silky Silver; Romantic Red
  • Filament material: PLA

After you have printed your parts ...
Remark: As all parts are designed to fit very precisely, it may happen that you have to rework one or the other part a bit with sandpaper and/or cutter due to different dimensional accuracy of the printers and the different behavior of the filaments.

Supplies

For this project you will need:

  • 1x … 64x64x3mm white polycarbonate glass, 70% translucency (or transparent polycarbonate glass or twin wall-sheet). I used polycarbonate glas - because of the more pleasant light.
  • 1x … Ø 4x55mm from a threaded rod (or screw Ø m4 x 60 and saw of the screw head)
  • 1x … Ø 4x45mm from a threaded rod (or screw Ø m4 x 50 and saw of the screw head)
  • 2x … Ø M3x20mm + plus 2 matching washers (to connect head, neck and light base)
  • 4x … wing nuts Ø 4mm
  • 10x … washers Ø 15x4,5mm
  • 5x … self-tapping screws Ø 2,2x 9,5mm
  • 4x … self-adhesive rubber pads Ø 8x1,6mm
  • Switch wire, 10cm
  • Drill, Ø 2mm
  • Fretsaw
  • Soldering Iron
  • Solder
  • Glue
  • Sandpaper
  • Phillips screwdriver

Especially for the light installation you need:

  • AC/DC Socket 5,5/2,1 mm
  • 4G bulb socket
  • 2 Position Mini Toggle Switch
  • 4G LED bulb 2,5W/250Lm
  • AC/DC power adapter

IMPORTANT!: I do not advise the installation of a higher wattage bulb, because of too much heat development!

Some of these parts you can find here:

Before you start ... here an overview:

  • All print parts.
  • Different "glass" options.
  • All possible parts you need for assembly.
  • All parts you need for the electric.

Preparing the Lamp Head - Polycarbonate Glass

BSL_10.jpeg
BSL_11.jpeg

Saw from a polycarbonate glass plate, 3mm thick (70% translucency) square piece 64x64mm. I did it with a fretsaw. You can finish the edges with sandpaper.

Now insert the polycarbonate glass into the lamp head and press it against the edge - from the inside of the tube - for a few seconds. Put a very small drop of glue in each corner.

Preparing the Lamp Head - Assemble the Light Unit

BSL_13.jpeg
BSL_14.jpeg
BSL_15.jpeg

Now you need the printed part "BSL_LED Lamp_lightsocket.stl" and a 4G bulb socket.

To attach the bulb socket to "BSL_LED Lamp_lightsocket.stl", you need a Ø 2mm drill bit. Feed the two wires of the bulb socket through the hole in "BSL_LED Lamp_lightsocket.stl". Hold both parts firmly together and drill through the two holes in the bulb socket into the printed part. Now fix the bulb socket with 2 self-tapping screws Ø 2,2x 2,9 mm to the "BSL_LED Lamp_lightsocket.stl".

Now take the just assembled part, the 2 Position Mini Toggle Switch and the AC/DC Socket (5,5/2,1mm).

You need one switch wire about 10 cm long. Solder the wires from the bulb socket and the switch wire to the AC/DC socket and to the switch as shown in the picture and in 3D.

Preparing the Lamp Head - Installation of the Light Unit

BSL_20.JPG

To connect head, neck and light base you need 2x … Ø M3x20mm + plus 2 matching washers. Take the "BSL_LED Lamp_head.stl, the "BSL_LED Lamp_neck.stl" and the assembled light unit. Lead it into the box and position it over the holes. Take the screws and put them through the neck from below and fix them with the nuts. I also used washers. It's a little fiddly but you get it done! Now you can also insert and fix the AC/DC socket.

Take "BSL_LED Lamp_back.stl". Insert the switch into the hole provided.

Preparing the Lamp Head - Assembling the Lamp Head - Mounting the Back

For attaching the back plate you need 2 self-tapping screws Ø 2,2x 2,9mm.

Assembly - Mounting Head, Leg and Foot

BSL_23.JPG
BSL_24.JPG

For the mounting of the legs to „BSL_LED Lamp_neck.stl“ you need

  • 2x "BSL_LED Lamp_leg.stl"
  • Ø 4x45mm threaded rod (or a screw Ø m4 x 50 and saw of the screw head)
  • 4 washers Ø 15x4,5mm (At all points where parts touch, a washer should be used. This ensures a smooth movement of the joints and the turning of the wing nuts).
  • 2 wing nuts

For the assembly of the foot joint you need

  • 2x "BSL_LED Lamp_foot.stl" "BSL_LED Lamp_spacerwasher.stl"
  • Ø 4x55mm threaded rod (or a screw Ø m4 x 60 and saw of the screw head)
  • 6 washers Ø 15x4,5mm (At all points where parts touch, a washer should be used. This ensures a smooth movement of the joints and the turning of the wing nuts).
  • 2 wing nuts

Finally, note that you can align the feet forward or backward, depending on how you prefer them.
When you have decided that, I recommend - to improve the slip resistance - to attach small self-adhesive rubber pads to the bottom of the lamp feet (4x rubber pads Ø 8x1,6mm).

To light the lamp you will need a 12 V AC/DC power adapter.

Have fun assembling! - I hope without problems! ... and an ambient light!
