Bed Sheet Tightener

I got tired of having a loose bottom sheet, so I searched for a solution and found the Bed Scrunchie. They have elastic loops that clip to your bed sheet. You can use theirs for $40-$50 if you can't sew. Or, you can make your own for about $3 if you can sew.

Supplies

List of supplies used:

Sewing machine

Thread

1/8 inch Paracord. I used about 24 feet for a queen bed. Actually, that was too long. About $3 for 50 feet.

Part of a branch.

Drill

Elastic. Cut 4 inch strips. I used the elastic from men's briefs.

Lighter

Paracord

Start with the paracord. Cut a suitable length to go around your bed, and add another couple of feet. Burn the ends so they don't fray. While the ends are still hot, use a piece of card stock to press them into a point so they will pass through the branch. Don't burn yourself.

The Branch

Cut a branch to about 2.5 inches, strip off the bark, and drill a .25 inch hole through the center.

Tying the Knot

Make a slip knot on one end of the paracord. The short loose end should be able to slide. Then tie an overhand knot on the short loose end, and pull tight. This is called a jam knot. Feed the other end through the hole in the branch. Tie a knot so it doesn't slip out.

Sewing the Elastic

Take a 4 inch piece of elastic and sew it to the sheet. Do not sew into any elastic that you may already have on your sheet. You won't need to stretch your sheets. Sew at 6 inch intervals for a fitted sheet, or 12 inch intervals for a flat sheet.

How the Tightener Works

Try this out before you put the paracord through the loops. Bring the ends together, then slip the branch through the loop. Make sure the loose end coming out of the hole on the branch side is directly over the bottom paracord. Pull tight. This acts like a taut line or a trucker's hitch. To loosen, either pull the loose end the opposite direction, or twist the branch so it slips out of the loop.

Stringing the Loops

Start midway on one side with the end opposite the paracord loop, string all loops. Leave the branch off at this point. Slip on the branch when you have completed all loops. Throw the sheet on your bed, and turn everything under.

Snugging the Sheet Tight

Reach under your mattress and grab the loop end of the paracord with one hand, and the loose end of the branch paracord with your other hand Pull tight until your bed sheet is flat and smooth. When washing, remove the paracord. Congratulations. You did it!
