Bed Pockets
If you are like me, in that once you get into bed you don't want to get out again, particularly on those cold mornings then this could be the perfect solution. These bed pockets provide easily accessible storage for books, mobile phones, iPads and glasses. A useful addition to any bedroom! Or it can also be used on the arm of the couch to keep that pesky remote control in sight.
Materials
- Fabric Scissors
- Pins
- Iron
- Cotton or Cotton/Polyester Fabric (I chose to use two different coloured fabric)
- Sewing Machine
Template: Piece A
The first template you need to create is for the back piece. This piece is 40cm x 50cm.
To create a paper template for this piece, I had to tape 4 pieces of A4 paper together.
Pin the template onto the fabric you are going to use and cut around the edges.
Cut out two of these pieces.
Template: Piece B
This piece will become the top pockets.
For this piece cut out a template of 40cm x 21cm, from A3 paper.
Pin the template to the fabric you would like to use.
To provide a contrast I decided to use a different coloured fabric for this top pocket piece
Cut two of these pieces.
Template: Piece C
Piece C is the final piece and will become the front pocket.
The dimensions of this piece are 19cm x 40cm, again you can use a piece of A3 paper to create a template
Pin the template to the fabric and cut out 2 pieces.
The Pockets
Place the two pieces of B, right sides together.
Sew along one of the longest sides, keeping approx. 1cm from the edge.
Repeat with piece C.
Iron
Unfold both pieces (as shown in pictures)
Iron along the fold
Fold it back over so the right sides are facing outwards and the seam is inside
Sewing the Pockets Together
Place the front pocket (piece C) on top of the back pocket (piece B), as shown in pictures.
Make sure you can see 1.5 cm of the back pocket, equally all along.
Pin them in place.
Measure 19 cm down
Mark this place with a pin
Draw a straight line using fabric chalk and a ruler. (I used a pencil because I did not have fabric chalk)
Sew along this line
Sewing the Pockets to the Back
Take one of the back pieces (piece A)
Place the pockets along the bottom edge
Measure along and mark 28cm
Draw a line down the pockets with chalk or a pencil
Sew along this line
You now have 5 different pockets
Sewing It Together
Take the second back piece (piece A) and place the piece with the pockets on top of it, right sides together.
Pin it in place
Sew around the piece, keeping 1 cm from the edge of the fabric
Make sure to leave a gap somewhere, in order to be able to turn it inside out
Turn It Inside Out
Turn your work right side out by pulling the fabric through the gap.
Fold the edges of the gap in half a centimetre and pin in place.
Stitch to close the gap.
Finished Product
You now have a finished bed pocket hanger. Hang it on the side of your bed by placing the side without the pockets underneath the mattress.
The product can also be used on the arms of couches and can even be easily turned into a shoulder bag by just adding a strap and closure.
