Materials

1. 28 gauge copper wire ( 1 pound)

2. Two plastic dixie cups

3. Two rare earth magnets

4. Aux cable

The three main components to a speaker are the diaphragm, voice coil, and connector. The diaphragm makes the sounds. The voice coil vibrates to create a sound and has a magnetic field. Also, the connector to supply the sound. Voice coils vibrate because when connected to an audio source ( an aux cord in a phone) it sends electric signals. These electric signals cause a change in polarity in a magnet. Which basically means it flipped its sides of attraction without moving. By changing polarity quickly the voice coil pulls on a diaphragm causing air to move. Air moving makes sound essentially. We perceive this change in air pressure and vibrations in the air as sound. Basically, the vibrated air hits our inner ear, vibrating that and it sends signals to the brain. The brain decodes this and we can hear! In this case, the diaphragm is the flat surface of the cup.

Unravel desired length of wire above 2 inches.

Sand an inch around the outer circumference of the wire on each side.

We found in our studies that if not sanded properly, the sound is fuzzy and not clear. We also found that 10 coils were the least loud, 20 were medium, and 40 were the loudest.

Repeat for as many wires as needed. Two wire lengths for one set of headphones

Place a magnet on the outside of the cup or (optional) another one on the inside

Coil wire how tightly or loosely you desire. It is recommended you coil around a circular object larger than the magnet. Also, create as many numbers of coils as desired. We decided to use 40 coils because it created the clearest sound.

Separate two ends enough so that they can connect to the aux of the two coils. Cut three pieces of wire about a foot each. Sand all of six of the ends.

Tape the unsanded, coiled wire onto the outside magnet.

Wrap sanded wires together as shown.

Plug into an audio source and rock out!

The headphones work exceptionally the sound quality is great and the way the work is, by using the coiled wires that are wrapped around the magnets to pick up sound and vibration coming from the aux plug on your cellphone. The magnets vibrate creating the sound of the song that you are playing. Thus, allowing you to hear the music clearly and in somewhat HQ.

Not hearing anything. Make sure each wire is tightly connected both on the aux cord and each other.

Fuzzy sound? Sand all of ends more thoroughly.
